History #136

The unknown. It lies at the root of all fear, and has inspired legends, superstition, folklore, customs, hysteria, and even murder throughout history. Still today we feel the shadowy presence of our ancestors' struggles to explain the mysterious in almost every facet of our lives. Whether it be in the form of religion, urban legends, pop culture, ghost stories, superstitious rituals, and so much more we are still just fighting to keep our monsters in the dark. Welcome to The Strange and Unusual Podcast.

    Good story, not the voice
I’m so sorry to the podcaster! You have a great story, good research but you need someone with a stronger voice. You have a great product, you just need to tweak that little bit, in my opinion. Of course my opinion is not the only one, and it may not even be good. 😊 The best of luck with your pod!

    Meh.
Not the voice to be doing a podcast. Interesting and perfect themes, however, I want to learn and not fall asleep.

    Cozy and Interesting
I re-listen to episodes all the time. The best blend of spooky, cozy, and interesting. Also very well researched.

    Rip Off
This podcast is a total rip. If you want to listen to a GOOD podcast, listen to The Quite Unusual Podcast. A podcast this one clearly rips off but being on Wondery Network, they can just turn to their fake download mills to bump up their numbers and get bad podcasts like this in front of you.

    Love
Soothing, but interesting. I love it.

    Spooky but calming!!
The musical intro and ending are auditory dreams-so creepy but somehow soothing! I always think of those old timey automated doll creations as I listen to the music box at the beginning. The narrator continues the creepy/calm effect with her soft voice and wonderfully eerie stories!

Like Listening to an Eighth Grade Class Presentation
Listening to someone read to you can be great, if done well. This was not. The host needs to work on delivery so it doesn’t come across as flat. Also, the unnecessary details that are included made the episode draggggg. I kept hitting the 15 second skip feature to get past the agonizingly long Beetlejuice plot summary. Listening to this gave me flashbacks to middle school English Class presentations. Legit, this sounded a lot like a kid reading from a script that had a word requirement they struggled to meet. Not a fan.

The perfect podcast to fall asleep to
I love Allyson’s storytelling and her voice is so soothing! the stories are so good but the way she tells them will lull you into a deep peaceful sleep. Her reading of Frankenstein is so good. The episode on the Catacombs in Paris is one of my faves.

    Something to look forward to
I don’t usually leave reviews but I was so put off by the vile comment from user Sophie26773389. Sophie must be possessed by a demon to spew such vile filth! Personally I find Allison’s voice to be very soothing and hope in the future Allison can make an episode covering Sophie26773389’s eventual exorcism.

    A forever listener
She takes breaks. That’s ok. I do too but when’s she’s back - the episodes are sooo good. That’s why this podcast will be in my “favorites” forever and when there’s a new episode, it’s the first I listen to. Btw, the episode with pregnant woman & young child, living in the funeral home has ruined me. Now, everytime I go to sooth my kids after a nightmare, there’s a part of my mind that is screaming with terror about what could be there. Thank you. No honestly. It’s kinda fun. 🖤

    Susan Monica
This was first time listening to your podcast. Definitely flaws thruought the podcast but @ the end when you had the audacity to say “I wanted to bring y’all something different, since it’s always men perpetrating the crimes o usually talk about” Oh My God!!! Are you being serious right now? Do you in no way, see the ironicalness of such a statement! “Susan” was/is a man! One with some serious mental issues @ that! Yet you still felt the need to put in your opinion on “no judgement treat people as they want to be” so yea, your a joke

    Yay Alyson is back!
I love this podcast so much and was so happy to listen to a new episode. The stories and the background music are divinely creepy and entertaining. One of the few podcasts I listen to on a regular basis. Keep up the great work!! 🖤

    My new fave podcast!
Oh my gosh. How I never knew about this show before now is a wonder to me. This is the best podcast I’ve discovered in a long time. I love Allison’s dedication to dark subject matters. Her shows are entertaining and thoroughly researched and I wish we could be friends (haha). I never ever write reviews for podcasts but really felt compelled to. Thank you for putting your heart into this! What an absolute delight.

I wanted to like this I really did but it’s just too flowery and poetic for my taste.

This combo is amazing and enjoyable. Host has a great voice and diction. Brilliant presentation. Background nosies/music not annoying and very appropriate enhancing the creepiness. The “theme” song” is just enough and so unnerving and blessedly short. Well-researched and sourced. She even pronounces words like “macabre” properly where most hosts butcher it. Love!

    Excellent research!
I appreciate all the work that goes into this. I love the host’s voice. I’m a Morbid fan and now this one too!

My top spooky and historical podcast!
I have loved this podcast for a couple years and get very excited whenever she drops a new episode. I often go back and re-listen to my favorites! The episodes are so well done and are incredibly well written and researched.

    Spooky and so peaceful!
I absolutely love this podcast and have started listening every night before bed because her voice is so relaxing. There are bits of history, true crime, cultural commentary, spookiness, and poetry all woven together in a really well researched and thoughtful way.

    Stories are great.
The stories are all great. Like others I wish there were more consistent episodes, but I understand that that’s been addressed. I also understand that it’s being told in a way to be spooky, but the pauses at unnatural times do really throw me. Sometimes I think my phone stopped or that it’s a pause that’s happening at a natural place and am confused when it picks up mid sentence, etc. I was also pretty bummed when a new episode went up and more than half of said super short episode was ads. I get tossing an ad in as this is how money is made, but with infrequent posting it felt crummy to get hit with an episode that was mostly trying to sell other stuff. Overall Alison is doing something I could never do and I’ll continue to listen as new episodes come out. The stories are great and the content is perfectly creepy.

    Great
I really enjoy this podcast the history is intriguing and the tales sometimes spooky and sad but keep you interested until the very end!! Highly recommended if you like morbid and spooky tales!!

Fun Podcast with interesting nuggets of history
I love podcasts like this one. It's a great combination of odd history, unual occurances and quirky stories.

    Voice
What’s with the voice affectation? You can tell the difference especially in earlier episodes and ads. The content is usually good. I skip the stories she writes herself.
  • Abstract Lauren
    So great!
This is amazing. I love how it’s part story telling and part facts. Tics all my boxes. So awesome.

    October Spooky?
Seriously can’t believe this is a profession of Halloween is your season and you have released two shows ALL MONTH? I don’t even pay for this content yet I feel ripped off. I have no interest or passion in listening to something that has no interest or passion. Quite honestly the laziest show on my feed. I am surprised it still exists when it is so irreverent to its own purpose in its own Holiday Season. Morbid network is really letting anyone in with a microphone and they don’t care if you just dial it in. I will immediately unfollow so that someone more relevant will pop up on my feed and not bore me to death with a mediocre macabre. It should be the EASIEST job to dig up spooky historical facts, especially during Halloween. It’s like following a Christmas podcast that takes off for the holidays. What is your purpose? Why should I care if you don’t?

I really want to love this…
I really want to love this and was excited to see a decent amount of episodes to get through, BUT the narration (for me) is hard to listen to. The stories seem like they’re so good, but I find myself distracted and then frustrated with the cadence. :( I’ve even skipped around looking for titles that intrigued me. But sadly, it’s back to the drawing board.
  • Fauxreal222
    Spooky stories good for bedtime
Love listening to these stories! And the podcast has definitely grown and gotten better over time. Really love listening, especially during spooky season!
  • GailVee
    Bland voice, Great stories! 🤔
The narrator’s voice is way to mono and it irks me to hear it obviously reading. I couldn’t tell that she broke from the story and went into ads. The stories sound like they’re super interesting, but man does that boring voice ruin it for me. I don’t care if you have a lisp or a retainer. That’s all fine. But put some UMF into it. Bring it to life for me!!! Are you dead inside, narrator? It’s okay girl. I feel you.
  • haifhcurnxn
    Original story
Story is pretty good, I have to turn it down so low that I can barely hear it to get through the sound effects without turning it off immediately. We know what crunching bones sound like without them being played 8 times per episode. It would be much creepier if I could hear them talking over the sound effects.

    Great content
Not even sure how I found this Gem, but I can’t stop listening… she does a great job… historical true crime is fascinating…

    Very interesting and spooky
I just started this podcast and am really enjoying it. It combines my favorite things: history, crime, and spooky stories. I love that it isn’t just one story per episode, but is a tapestry of stories and information put together for the subject. Seriously underrated hidden gem.
  • dubbie52
I really wanted to like this…
I’ve given the podcast soooo many chances but it's the voice and too many long pauses I just cannot get past. I find myself disengaged after about 5 minutes into it.
  • Caitlyn A
    Peak writing
The writing/scripting of this podcast is some of the best I’ve heard. Love the history, folklore, true crime, literature all mixed in but weaved together expertly for a cohesive narrative. Also loved listening to the original horror fiction, seriously impressive 👌🏼
  • KristinJane
    Beautiful and facinating Podcast
This podcast is so interesting becasue Allison has a wonderful voice to listen to that is elegant and calm while talking so eloquently about some of the most macabre topics. I love that she includes so much history and detail in her podcasts and wait on pins and needles for the next one she releases.
  • Druidlady
Hidden treasure, let’s not keep it hidden
This podcast is fantastic. I always learn something while being totally entertained. I love this podcast. The host is inviting while still a bit spooky. She is the perfect combination of the two. The stories are interesting and thought provoking. I find myself thinking about the story long after listening to it. I hope she continues to pump out episodes.
  • catmom15
Great content, narration could be better
I love the content (especially the Poe) but the mispronunciation of fairly common words (“tapestry”, “eschew”, “tremulous”, “anatomist/autonomous” are some examples) is distracting and takes away from the gravitas of the stories. Just going over your script and double checking words you’re not sure about would go a long way.
  • rayanne53
    This is the perfect podcast
Entertaining, Educational, and every show is very well told and thoroughly researched. I’m so glad I discovered it, I hope it continues, because I’m hooked!
  • Imthepeanut
    Love it!
Morbid turned me on to your podcast and having Poe as a participant is so rad. I’m related to him on my moms side. 🤘🏽
