Uncomfortable Conversations with Josh Szeps

593

The world has never been more connected. Yet never more divided. We yell at each other from inside our echo chambers. But change doesn’t happen inside an echo chamber. It’s time to get out, to stretch our legs, to step on some land mines. It's time to have an uncomfortable conversation with Josh Szeps.

    Substack? No.
I’m not going to download the Substack App rife with grifters like Glenn Greenwsld and Matt Taibbi. Let’s stay away from the Alt Right Swamp.

    Bait and switch
The only uncomfortable conversation you will hear if you have a functioning brain that is not polluted by most woke agenda, maybe every 10th show is somewhat not dogmatic, but overall total garbage.

    Entertaining and Enlightening
One of my favorite podcasts. In a sea of outrage media, UC is a welcome vessel to help navigate the thorny issues facing the world. Josh is highly intelligent and witty, and although he certainly has a healthy ego, it manifests in confidence not boorishness. He will deftly feign ignorance on a subject to encourage his guest to explain. I finish 95% of his interviews or monologues with important things to ponder, challenging my prior assumptions. The premium subscription is well worth it.
  • Andiobe
    Clear and honest
I just discovered Josh’s podcast, and I love his concise, honest and deep thinking on the issues. Bravo!

    Josh crumbles like a cookie
While I think Josh had a lot of really good, solid moments on this podcast, I think he simply can’t get away from the fact that he is in fact, a leftist. Every time he hosts a progressive on his show, he crumbles like a cookie, always failing to push back on the assertion that nothing is happening to make the right really all that mad. That’s too bad really – he has real potential.
  • NYCMontana
    Love Josh’s solo thoughts
…it’s obvious he takes his time to explore multiple sides of an issue.

    Fact check it
Second time listening, episode 173 (I think?) 15 min 40 sec in. Sounded off, so I fact checked it. Look for yourself, interviewer and guest are lying, or haven’t bothered to verify whatever social media post they got this from. Can only assume the rest of the show follows the same partisan standards.
  • Shwayne5
    Thoughtful and witty
After listening to one episode of Josh I knew his podcast would be worth supporting and it hasn’t dissapointed. I like that he’s willing to invite people on who’ve called him a racist to explain their reason for calling him that. If you listen to tbd episode with his accuser you’ll quickly realize she has no basis for making that accusation and the she believes that white people can’t have let alone express their opinions on anything or anyone that isn’t white. She’s the racist, and Josh allows her the opportunity to prove just that.
  • LookatLao
    One of the Best Interviewers
Josh is one of the smartest (and funniest) interviewers out there. Leans heterodox, but often pushes back on the inanity of the current culture war moment. Also, the accent is pretty great.

    Woke Derangement Disease
im watching as so many podcasts descend into an absolute fetishism of what they see as a "wokeness" problem. It is amusing to listen to podcasts elevate Twitter comments and pile-ons to representing the entire world. Or treating isolated instances of Lefty madness like they are widespread. Twitter is not the world. This is no different than the PC panic of the 90s. And it's getting really boring.
  • Bunny Cub
    New genre of person
There’s a new kind of person who’s like “I’m not woke and I also see problems with the left” and think they deserve a frigging parade for not being rigid and hyper ideological. Are you aware of my views on trans? They’re not what you think! AMA?! Who cares!!!!
  • kristi history
    Balanced and sane
The thing trans people need to keep in mind is us “normies” make up 80% of the population. And the vast majority of us support the right for adults to marry any adult they wish. To own anything they want. Do any job they wish. Anything. But the violence with which you are trying to shove your extreme version of trans activism into everyone’s face and space will and is alienating us. And potentially harming and reversing the rights that have been won. Please remember to treat people with the common courtesy and compassion you demand for yourself.

    Australia
Australia is probably not a real place, so you should assume that Szeps is just as fake as anything else about it. An otter with a duck bill? A anti-woke gay commentator? Obviously fictional creatures.

    always worth the time
josh is one of the, if not The, best interviewers in my podcast feed. such good questions he’s not afraid to ask! & a personality that gets guests to open up. i love the breadth of topics he’s willing to touch (although, will he venture to risk an uncomfortable convo with someone like diana rodgers, aka host of sustainable dish, the nutritionist that challenges the all-around moral superiority of vegan diets with… facts?) he’s kind, frank, funny, patient, smart. a bit full of himself, but in the best way. i love the genuine curiosity he brings to discussion with folks, whether he seems to be generally on the same page as them or far off. and, even more, the generosity with which he approaches others’ views. well worth a listen.

    I ❤️ Szeps
Josh, from one gay Jew to another, I love you madly. Keep up the good work, and please don’t be a stranger from The Fifth Column, where you always steal the show.

Like Josh, don’t like the paywall
It’s too bad that fewer people will be exposed to Josh’s views and conversations because of the recently added paywall. Happy to listen to more ads to avoid having to pay.

    Freedom of speech
I'm sure Sam Harris spoke to Charles Murray because he's interested in the world around him. Instead of expecting him to justify his guests and acquaintances, why aren't you congratulating him for actually having difficult conversations? He's not responsible for what the world thinks. He's simply encouraging the world to think. You should follow his lead.

Idk who you are but it’s clear that you’re suffering severe Stockholm syndrome after years of lock down by your Aussie superiors. open your mind, Use your brain and be less concerned about your media ‘gatekeeper’ status. 5 stars only because I won’t slam a free podcast with one star.
  • Dadjb
Open, honest, funny, a breath of fresh air.
Josh does a great job of blending interviewing and personal viewpoints and philosophies. He is flexible but not easily pushed around. Sometimes the conversations are uncomfortable but they represent the way people with competing ideas should actually engage with each other. And his sense of humor adds dimension that is quite different to others who are trying to have difficult conversations.
  • Zbollenb
    Good show
Nice perspective. Balanced view. Always find a few things that a slightly disagree with, which means it’s a good listen and not aligned to a monolith viewpoint
  • blkNOR
Josh is a voice in the darkness.
I really appreciate that Josh is willing to ask the questions that so few are willing to ask these days. Not only does he ask them, he does try to force an actual reply, to the states question…many of you will k ow what I mean. Give him a listen, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

    Dose of larrikinism

I wish he was a bit more prepared
In his episode with Dianna E. Anderson, he seemed a bit unprepared and passive when Diana made false claims about gender. She made claims throughout the episode that would have been easily dispoven with a simple google search, but Josh didn’t call her out on false information. It was a bit frustrating to listen to.
  • missdino001
Not as open minded as he claims
I heard him on as a guest on the Psychology Podcast and was highly impressed. First episode and he’s fast insulting the right within 10 minutes of the episode. He’s no different and just contributes to the decisiveness being pushed by both sides. This is exactly what so many of us who are open minded and inquisitive are looking to escape.

    Entertaining but...
Found this podcast thanks to Josh Barro whose two current podcasts are phenomenal. This Josh talks a lot but has interesting if not always particularly knowledgeable guests. He thinks he knows more about US than he actually does: vis-à-vis politics, history and how Americans think; it’s really hard to believe he lived in NYC ever because he knows little about it. Also, Australia is NOT more diverse than US, period. He hasn’t a clue what homeopathic is and doesn’t comprehend that “woke” does not mean cancel culture or people you disagree with. “Woke” merely means ‘alert to injustice’, particularly but not exclusively racial injustice; he shouldn’t let his guests say otherwise even if it’s “uncomfortable”. This latter is a growing problem in media - allowing terms to be morphed into incorrect meanings. Nevertheless, I’ve now listened to most of the back episodes and the podcast is entertaining. The topics are mostly current. And it’s nice hearing different perspectives, even if they’re not all well-informed. And he does push back on guests occasionally, which is refreshing.
  • Rememberist
Josh Szeps is not of this Earth.
I’ve been listening to Uncomfortable Conversations for quite some time now, and it’s become uncomfortably obvious that Josh Szeps is probably not a real human boy. He regularly shows observational and rhetorical skills that are obviously not usually available to most of the human cattle that inhabit this planet. His eagerness to engage with a wide variety of people simply in order to understand them is somewhat frightening. I recommend that you never listen to this horrible man ever again. Or just follow your heart, silly human.

    Wokeness Real?
I just started to listen to this podcast, and thought yes! A balanced show. But this episode? When the guest said no one has ever been cancelled by the Left, and there was no legitimate push back, I felt sick. What about Amy Cooper? It wasn’t just a twitter storm, but her entire life has been ruined on very, very questionable circumstances. The gate teed speed to her is shameful. How about the kids in the MAGA hats? The Left wanted them killed. Killed! Their families had to move, their school shut down and somehow this did not happen. And, the story was false. I’m liberal and hate this inane witch hunting of the Left. This was a poor discussion. I’ll listen again, but the only examples of being cancelled were Bari Weiss and Andrew Sullivan? Silly to not know more. Ugh.

Regardless of the subject, this podcast has never failed to hold my interest for the entire episode. A unique talent and point of view.

    Disappointing Internalized Antisemitism
I was a devoted fan of Josh since his old podcast We The People Live. However, after he made disparaging remarks about Israel without substantial substance facts or evidence, I felt compelled to point out a slew of contradictions in his logic. After making a good faith effort at dialogue, I realized someone who's podcast is literally called "uncomfortable conversations" is an absolute hypocrite if they refuse to do as such (especially from a devoted listener).

    My new favorite podcast!
I wish I would have found Josh's podcast sooner. He's the least biased and most genuinely curious host I've listened to so far. He covers a wide range of topics and he holds his guests to a high standard of honesty and accountability.

Always an education and humorous as well
I love this podcast! Josh‘s insightful interviews, fascinating guests and timely topics make for an amazing podcast, which I eagerly await each week. Josh‘s unique blend of political and cultural insight, sprinkled with just the right amount of humor, place him above the crowded podcast swamp and into a league of his own. Keep it up Josh!

Love the show but most recent episode was unbearable
I was so interested in listening to the conversation about Covid contrarianism but I switched it off. The guest interrupted Josh so many times, spoke over him endlessly but had nothing particularly interesting to say. Josh I love your show but that was awful

Josh Szeps is the type of voice we need right now.
What’s not to like and appreciate with Josh Szeps. A good faith, articulate, intelligent, open-minded, serious, silly and funny voice who extends the courtesy and is willing to engage civilly with people who are not like minded. Add the Australian accent, good looks and a quick wit and you have the type of person and voice that can bring some actual calm, reason and understanding to us all. Peace, love and prosperity to all of his future endeavors. ✌️❤️💪🎙😃
