leaderfulCritical, eye-opening learning for all Americans by one of the best journalists todayI’m a White guy, Irish-American. I’ve always tried to educate myself about the history and lived experience of my Black brothers and sisters, and other oppressed groups in our country, in order to inform and guide my social and political action. Trymaine Lee has shown me how incredibly ignorant I have been. For example, his guest on the superb series he has recently hosted regarding reparations, “Uncounted Millions,” clearly explained the compelling necessity to correct the devastating impacts of slavery and ongoing discrimination and injustice. No other reporter or news analyst whom I have heard has come close to this depth, beyond sound bytes and opinion that is based only upon ignorance. Anyone who wants to move beyond misperception, ignorance and fear to compassion, just action, restoration and healing should listen to Into America pronto.

thatchickwhohatestwitterObsessed!I’ve been evangelizing about this with my friends and family, as I did several other Into America series in the past. Lee is a brilliant historian and storyteller. And THIS is the story America has tried not to tell since the ink dried on the Emancipation Proclamation. Almost instantly, the state’s rights myth was formed, confederates were made into heroes and 40 acres and a mule was reversed by Lincoln’s successor, Trump’s fav president, Andrew Johnson. This podcast takes on a conversation most of America has wanted to avoid: the financial impact of slavery on the enslaved. It artfully uses little known American reparations- 1) those passed in DC in 1862 for white slave owners whose property had been liberated from bondage, and 2) and Redress for those families who were arrested and sent to Japanese internment camps simply because they were Japanese- in order to illustrate how long this struggle has been, how Black folks seem to be the only ones who can’t seem to get reparations and how impactful they would be if FINALLY implemented. I can’t say enough about this podcast! WHERE IS THE BOOK, TREMAINE?!?!

LBS301Clearly Makes the case for and a Way to Reparations - NOWTa-Nehisi Coates statement to the Senate was terrific. Those who lie about the past are certain to twist the truth about the present and the future. This is the way democracy is lost. Here’s looking at you Trump. Reparations is an essential part to seeing our nation’s past as it truly was. Let’s learn now how we can best do it where it can make a difference. We need more education about how reparations can be made. Signed, a white person

Big Baby65Wonderful, Interesting, & Educational!I’m new to the world of podcast but I’m catching on and now following some really interesting podcasts, which includes my new favorite, “into america”. I really enjoy the plain facts, no spin, no bull; just the facts and how policies, politicians, misinformation, and disinformation has an impact particularly on Blacks. When faced with facts, it’s hard not to believe that America has major issues that must be addressed, understand, and how to resolve them. It’s important to clearly understand what’s happening now in our country. Trymaine does an excellent job describing the issues and interviewing key figures that has played a part in making things better. I also like that he not only interviews Democrats but also Republicans; no bias on Mr. Lee’s part! Thank you for giving us a window “into america”!

Marty62010Consider as one of your top 10Into America since its inception has been some of the most informative, inspiring, moving to compassion, investigative reporting in a podcast that I have come across in the podcast era! Always in rotation of my top five. Trymaine one of my fave reporters ever. Uncounted Millions just exceptional history, investigative reporting, family and cultural history & storytelling for the case for reparations. I’m a white cis, het, raised religious (LDS) in the Intermountain West, PhD psychotherapist interested and ever seeking to be more involved in helping create a more socially economically just and compassionate USA.

All my nicknames were taken!Evidence that cannot be ignored!I cried this morning. I never met Dr. John Louis Flateau, but grief swam over me as though I lost my uncle. The nation did us a disservice when they buried this critical part of history. I just learned of this family; a family whose story should be part of the nation's story. Dear White Friends, it is long past time for us to be real friends. Thank you Mr. Lee. I wait for Thursday morning and the brilliant story telling designed and built and delivered by you and your team. God Bless. Debra Clyde

libgrrlHumanizes a key element of American historyBy leveraging one American family’s story, Lee humanizes the impact of slavery and Jim Crow in a way that should help anyone understand the case for reparations for Black American descendants of the enslaved. This is an engaging and impactful podcast that could easily be used in a history class.
-
André Marcel HarrisMasterful StorytellingThe new uncounted millions feature has left me in tears. Thank you for sharing history that many had no idea about.

GRP35080Reperations for ppl that were never slaves 🙄Maybe learn your own history before you try to rewrite it. Research the transatlantic slave trade & explain to me why ppl who never owned slaves, need to pay money to ppl that never were slaves, who's ancestors sold their own ppl into slavery? Y'all need to stop trying to get money that isn't yours & start actually contributing to a society you're trying to milk.

AlicestairTrymaine Lee’s Uncounted MillionsThis series is excellent! I’ve learned so much just from the first 4 episodes and gained invaluable insight into the true history, harm, complexity, and generational experience and impact right up to today. This series should serve as a source providing a foundation for all reparations dialogues, proposals, and actions. I highly recommend adding this to your required weekly podcast listening.

newb_COWonderful!!!Great series, love it!
-
CapeVUncounted Millions is a must listen!I have been a faithful follower of Trymaine Lee and Into America for several years, but his latest podcast project, Uncounted Millions, is next level! In this new series, Lee takes us on a trip to “discover an untold story of freedom and reparations.” Three installments in, this series is fascinating and inspiring throughout and heartbreaking in places. Waiting (im)patiently for the next episode. Put it in your queue and make it a priority to listen!

The_FitchuationReparations more like a free hand out💰The Asante Empire in Ghana exported slaves and used the profits to import gold. Between 1525 and 1866, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to North America, the Caribbean and South America, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. Only about 10.7 million survived the dreadful journey under bondage in slave ships The slave trade contributed to the expansion of the most powerful West African kingdoms such as Mali and Ghana, as the business became one of the main sources of foreign exchange. Know your ROOTS before you spew a trash ideology preaching for reparations when most of the slave trade began with the Sumerians. Research what the people of Sumer referred to themselves as.

Fernando HoustonLesson of historyThis podcast is a must listen. It will open your mind to question how history was thought
-
samm1203Must listen for all AmericansThe level of education that this podcast provides is insurmountable. This is the history that the right wing is trying so desperately to ban. This is the history that, without a doubt, would help all Americans come to the conclusion of Reparations NOW!
-
chefpatUncounted MillionsI really enjoyed this series! The journalistic style and story style reminded me of when I first heard the 1619 project. I was on the edge of my car seat the entire series, as I commuted to work this morning. The added interest was hearing the “Landry”name. The Newly elected governor is a Landry. However the story took a twist, I didn’t expect. I throughly enjoyed this series thank you.

Abro716The most instructive and educational podcast todayTremaine Lee has a soothing, captivating voice… His insightful observations on race in America are unparalleled. The most recent season about an ingenious former slave in DC, who was able to obtain reparations for his family just prior to the emancipation proclamation, when it was meant for only white slave owners at that time, explores how this clever transaction benefited future generations of an African American family, and gives us instructive and glaringly obvious proof that reparations can be beneficial for all Americans. It needs to happen yesterday. (Not that it matters but no, I am not of African descent. I’m white but I’ve always felt that reparations are necessary.)Highly recommend!!! Ps: re: Wilbers death - how can a man shoot himself twice in the head? And through a straw hat? Idk that sounds kinda sus… Did yt people cover up the reporting of lynchings and call them “suicides”? He was the richest black man in the parish but “was a bad man in this country”? Because he was rich?
-
LaLunaLebonCaptivatingEducational, well produced and truly captivating. I’m thankful for the topics featured on this program.
-
ashleyclaireroviraTurning the tideThis series makes a strong case for reparations by contrasting two branches of the same family & showing how legacy & inheritance makes the difference of night and day in every human life. Thank you for opening my eyes.
-
SAUFalconReparationsIt would be illegal to abandon a domestic dog into the streets with no food, water or means to survive . To even think that the enslaver deserved to be compensated for loss of property is mind blowing. The USA government owes the descendants of slaves money. The USA was built off of free and under compensated labor. Even though the enslavers are dead and gone ,their descendants benefited. White Americans benefit just by the color of their skin. Why do you think the ”karens” scream lies that cause people of color legal troubles that are often deadly? Why do self appointed white vigilantes feel the need to do unjustified citizens arrests? The USA governmental officials have allowed Black people to be robbed of land, wages, property, businesses and our very lives for years. The USA government refusal to pay Black people what is owed confirms that we are still seen as less than.
-
andreaeocWonderful ContentThank you so much for this. It literally proves how much better off the U.S. would be if reparations were in place then (AND now!) It is NOT too late it’s never too late and it would be the best thing to help heal history’s terrible stain. The Republican Senator from Kentucky - today’s minority leader - is wrong and his comments on the topic were/are heartless.

Jasch21This keeps showing in my list - didn’t as for, don’t wantFor some reason this show keeps spamming my list. I have not requested this show nor do I want it.

DLsegundoVital missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle of liberty and justice for allFrom my privileged, white, male, boomer perspective, there is no substitute for access to insight that is far outside my personal experience. Reparations seems such an obvious necessity, despite all the reasons not to pursue it. As hard as it looks to know exactly what to do, doing nothing can't be the answer. Gabriel Coakley's brilliant demonstration, before Emancipation, before 13th-15th amendments, even before the end of the war, shows us what has already been done, even within such a highly flawed legal framework. This demonstration includes the tangible impact of sustained generational wealth on the dignity and humanity of individual lives as well as, in turn, the boundless benefits to the society at large and EVERYBODY in it. So if unselfish reasons don't work for you, there are plenty of selfish ones too. What are we waiting for?
-
missmeesh682This is what should be taught in schoolWe should be taught that slave owners were the ones who received reparations and NOT the slaves themselves!! We should be taught that there were black Americans who did get some sort of reparations due to purchasing their own family members out of slavery. It’s sad that we don’t get accurate history taught to us. Everyone should listen to this podcast. Very interesting and inspirational.

AzurevirgoMr CoaklyThank you, Mr Lee for introducing the world to Mr. Coakly. I’ve been sharing these episodes with my brother. We are mesmerized by this historical figure. As a Washingtonian, I’ve never heard of him and I think we all should know his story simply because he truly exhibited the American mythology of “pulling yourself by the bootstrap”. By the way, I’ve been a fan since the beginning Keep up the great work.
