The pinnacle of infotainment! Crazy stuff you didn’t know about the greatest movies and music of the 80’s, 90’s, and beyond. Hilarity ensues as a research professor and a pop culture savant are pitted against each other in a debate to determine what entertainment icons of film, music, and games are the best of the best of Generation X. https://www.thesurelypodcast.com/

    This is the real deal
Anybody can claim to know a lot about 80’s and 90’s pop culture, but these guys really know what’s up. Whether tearing apart the inexcusable (Superman IV, Jaws 3D), praising the undeniable (Heartbreak City), or pitting the titans against one another (Raiders vs. Back to the Future) rest assured you’re getting the results of a meticulous deep dive on the subject matter. You will NOT be disappointed.

    Great White
I love the Great White episode. Took me back to the 80’s, before marriage, kids, and wokeness. Thanks for picking great topics to discuss on your podcast.

This is a must listen every week
Pros : great research, great topics, great lists and great energy between the hosts. These guys really do the leg work behind the show and teach me so much that I did not know. They’re also funny and the production value is to notch Cons: I wish I had discovered them earlier as they could have been bringing joy to my ears a few years earlier.

A most excellent journey through my childhood, teenage, and college years.
Due to my job, I travel a lot, and as a result, I listen to a lot of podcasts. A few become favorites, but only one has become an absolute must-listen every week: Surely You Can’t Be Serious. It is an absolute blast every week to listen to Jason and Dee explore all the best in ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s pop culture. Every episode is full of fun facts and obscure trivia that enrich the overall experience. The hosts themselves are obviously friends, and the show has such an easy, conversational tone that it’s easy to imagine yourself sitting at the local watering hole with them, debating the best Toto song. If podcasts were mountain ranges, SYCBS would be a Mt. Everest, with a few others reaching the heights of a Kilimanjaro and the rest left standing glumly on the Serengeti plains, hoping they themselves will one day reach those heights. Here’s to many more years of this fantastic podcast!

    Great listen
This is some much needed high quality Gen X content from my peers. But how dare you make me tear up at that Anne Murray song? No seriously I really loved the 1978 songs episode. Keep up the good work.

    My favorite podcast!
Hey guys, I always enjoy the content you put out and look forward every week to the next episode. Keep it up! My favorite episodes are when you compare movies with one another. Total Recall (1990) vs Starship Troopers (1997) would be a great one! They're both Verhoeven classics!

A Misspent Youth Influencing More Misspent Youth
I teach social studies at a military school in Virginia. I feel it is imperative that I keep up with current events so as to best explain topics that may come up in my classes. But I discovered the Surely guys just before Thanksgiving of 2022. Prior to this, I would listen to my local morning drive time show to stay up on local current events and listen to public radio to get more in-depth coverage on national and global issues. Boy was I a moron! Since Turkey Day, I have not turned on my radio to or from my 30 minute commute each way because of these guys. I have been loving every day’s drive to and from work, reliving the glory of yesteryear, and getting a new perspective on things I was too dense to understand as a teenager in the late 80s and early 90s. Who cares about global warming, geopolitical issues, and Pledge Week when you’ve got so many episodes of the Surely You Can’t Be Serious podcast!?!? I am learning so much about the movies and music that made me and using that knowledge to influence another generation of misspent youth. I am seriously thinking of developing a few lesson plans on entertainment trends of the 80s and 90s in my classroom and I can thank Jason and Dee for that. Do yourself a favor and drop in to the best 80s and 90s pop culture podcast on the inter-webs. You will thank me later. And more importantly you should thank the Surely guys. -Lord Morgan

    Great podcast!
Great rapport between the hosts. Great knowledge base… you can tell they care about the content and accuracy, but, most of all, you can tell they are passionate about this side job and love what they do. And, I’m a Cold War kid so the things they discuss are right in my formative wheelhouse! Keep it up guys!

    Childhood nostalgia at its best!
This is a “must subscribe” for anyone that grew up in the 80s. It’s such a great mix of music and film that seems to touch on every weekend of my 1980’s life, and those were the best of times! All of the episodes are home runs, even the ones that I’m not interested in at the outset. It’s been great to go back and watch a lot of the movies discussed with my late-teenage boys so that I get to share the best parts of my teenage years with them. I’m so glad that I found this podcast and I love sharing it with friends and then reminiscing with them each week!

    The Best Gen-X Nostalgia Pod
Hands down the best 80s/90s podcast out there. Fun and incredibly well-researched conversations about movies and music - including tons of great shows pitting two classics against each other. If you’re a GenXer or live that era, this is a must-listen.

Writing checks the podcast can’t cash!
This podcast is like a warm hug of nostalgia every week! 80s and 90s movies, music and pop culture! If it’s time to schedule your first colonoscopy, you’ll love this podcast! I especially recommend the episodes where they go track by track on Pearl Jam and Nirvana! High-quality well researched stuff!

    Macho Effort DD v. SNF
Dee and Jason, Just when I thought an idea couldn’t be any dumber, you go and do something like this … and totally redeem yourself! Loved the back stories on the movies, and the timing with Jennifer Grey’s memoir (Jason - it’s French, pronounced mim-wah) was uncanny. Learned a ton for sure. As a hair band fan of the 80’s, I gulp hard before admitting that I both owned that cassette tape and loved it. I can still sing every word on the album and was ready to spike the football declaring that one the winner. But, I stuck around for the finale. Why? Well, it should be obvious, I carried a watermelon! I was listening while running, and by the fifth song, I physically shrugged mid-stride and audibly exclaimed, “you’ve gotta be kidding me!” This album just kept providing hit songs, and they are songs that have stood the test of time, which is hard to do with disco. I’m not sure if the end of episode four caused me to have a Night Fever because of running in 90 degree temperatures or the quality of both the album and the deep nuggets you guys were digging for 🤔. I have to think it was the latter. I still watch Dirty Dancing when it’s on, but now I’m going to have to check out the full Saturday Night Fever album. Great work guys!!

These guys know the material and they know how to make a fun debate happen on each episode! Even when I think I know everything there is to know about a specific movie or album, they prove me wrong in the most entertaining way possible. Definitely a great podcast for the lover of all things 80's and 90's!

    Great podcast!
If you grew up in the 80’s as I did, and are a fan of the movies and music of that era, then you owe it to yourself to check out this podcast! Fun and informative; it’s a great listen. Each segment compares similar movies and music of one the greatest eras for either. I’ve always been a fan actor’s and musicians autobiographies on audio, but this is definitely more enjoyable. I commute 30 minutes to and from work each day and this podcast makes me look forward to it!

    My new favorite podcast!
This is such a fun show that reminds me of the friendly debates my friends and I used to have in high school! The hosts are very upbeat, informed, and their enthusiasm for the music/movies is infectious. It's also one of the few podcasts I can listen to with kids in the car and not worry about profanity. Keep up the great work and I can't wait for the next episode!

    I’m loving this
The Superman vs the man of steel argument was interesting! I do admit I love the original but now you make me want to watch man of steel again. But Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder is everything to me. But now you guys definitely inspired me to rewatch. These guys bring great arguments from both sides. Definitely can’t wait to dive deeper

I AM SERIOUS! And this is a great podcast.
Each episode we get treated to some of the age-old great debates: Thriller vs Bad, Airplane! vs Spaceballs, Van Halen vs Van Hagar... the possibilities are endless and so is the joy of listening to two hosts who clearly love what they’re talking about. Here’s to many more matchups to come!

    I’m Addicted!!!
If you’re a child of the ‘80s, and you’re NOT listening to this pod, I have one thing to say to you...”Surely you cant be serious!!!” This is nostalgia at its finest. I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I drink it while listening to this podcast. I fancy myself a trivia buff, and I can legit say that I learn something new from each and every episode! Keep ‘me coming!
  • Dws43215
Surely this is a great podcast!
My boy Jason and his pal Dee kill it with this great retro podcast focusing on music, movies and pop culture from the 80s. A great listen on the work commute!
  • Osubauer96
    Fun listening!
I love podcasts. I listen to everything from motivational to sports. This one I would describe as pop culture. The guys provide good information while not taking themselves too serious (hence the title!). They travel down all kinds of wormholes just like you do when having discussions with your friends. The episodes aren’t too long so you can usually listen to a full show without having to stop then pick it up again. I can’t wait to hear what they have in store!
  • KTandOti
    Thrilling!
Started off with their Thriller episode and really enjoyed hearing the hosts provide fun facts and entertaining chats about all things music. I learned that Thriller was originally to be called Starlight which is pretty cool. Look forward to checking out more. Subscribe and listen now!
  • Sweep the Bull, Johnny!
These ARE the droids you’re looking for!
Two guys, one mic, and a fountain of 80s-90s knowledge which they use to debate the issues that most Americans wonder about. Which movie, album, etc from the 80s and 90s was better. I don’t necessarily agree with either of them all of the time but they give you a lot to think about. If you are a child of the 80s or 90s or just a fan of the 2 greatest decades of the last millennium, then this podcast is for you. And I am serious... but don’t call me Shirley... well... maybe just this once...

This show is a blast! The guys come up with topics that force the listener to take a side and want to jump in to the battle royale. The first two episodes were so much fun. They really took me back. Can’t wait for the next one!
