Jonathan AcklesLove your deep dives! Would love an episode on veterans in 18th century society.I really enjoy this show and hope it continues to grow. I particularly like how you give a platform for academics and experts in various aspects of the 18th century. I especially appreciate how you put the perspective of ordinary people front and center. I was wondering if you guys would ever consider doing an episode about how military veterans were perceived in 18th century society. I was curious about this because I think it could shed light on a group that doesn’t always get into the wider history of the era. I also want to learn about this because I had an ancestor whose militia records describe a person with a very pronounced facial wound that I speculate may have occurred in battle but I can’t be certain. Basically he lost half his nose. I was wondering how someone with very visible scar or even a disability from military service would be treated in the wider society at the time.

JGNH12Great ShowCame for the Napoleonic era content but love the occasional nod to the American Revolution

BamshamAmazing historyLuke and the other guy are amazing hosts. With each topic and each guest, they tell a compelling narrative that teaches as well as entertains. The listener is left knowing more than they did at the outset, while also having the opportunity to go further down a given historic rabbit hole if they so choose. The hosts’ banter is full of wit, wisdom, and a touch of whimsey, which brings you back for more. Bravo!

Ry.RFavorite history podcastZack’s passion for the subject, along with his wit, sarcasm, and vocal disdain for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon film permeates his episodes and presents the era in a deeply fascinating, entertaining, and easily digestible manner. His guests are amazing and makes me wish I followed my childhood passion for history into adulthood.

FA3IIIdlpGreat Podcast, BUT NOT IN EUROPE!Outstanding podcast, really great information and discussion. Broad variety of topics and they get quite deep into them. Sometimes fascinating topics you’d not expect. Great for the Napoleonic maven or the casual listener. That said, the host requested reviews, saying that if every listener were to leave five stars, this would be one of the top podcasts or perhaps *the* top podcast in Europe. Europe? I’m sorry but the host is British, the podcast is in English, and BRITAIN SAW NAPOLEON OFF, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! WATERLOO, 1815, HAVEN’T HEARD FROM HIM SINCE!

LaPlaqueAn Absolute Must-ListenIf you are even casually interested in the Napoleonic era, you owe it to yourself to listen to this podcast. It goes deep on any and every issue you can think of regardless of how esoteric, and manages to avoid coming off as dry, stodgy, or pompous while it does so. Dr White and his expanding team of hosts do an excellent job of wringing as much information as possible from their guests as humanly possible, while also having quite a good bit of fun. I would rate this show 6 stars if I could!

James in ChicagoInteresting, informative but slow awkward pacingIf you want an informative podcast about the Napoleonic era this can be one resource. They handle the information like proper historians. However the pacing is slow with many episodes of dead air. For example the Simon Bolivar episode could have been better edited or presented with a little more energy.

Amateur DanDeep but approachable and inspiringAs a massive fan of this period I was nervous about podcasts as many are very weak and amateur. This is a tour d’force. The guest go deep into the subject matter but in an approachable way. I already have quite a knowledge base but I found much more of interest than I imagined. Some topics areas i was not interested in until I heard about them on some of the podcast.

KiranSchollAbsolutely worth your listen!I’ve been listening over the course of two years, and it’s been one of my favorite podcasts ever, especially relating to the Napoleonic wars. Zack’s podcast has such an incredible breadth of topics and guests that it’s always a treat to see who will be on next, and I love how varied the show is- it’s not the same topic over and over, but he and his guests have genuine, thoughtful conversations and riveting topics that are fun to listen and learn about. If you haven’t already subscribed, you absolutely should! Thank you Zack!

Pinkygen18FantasticGreat show for history nerds. Very in depth and the topics are usually very interesting. I could do a bit without the extended banter at the beginning (though I am sure some consider it part of the charm), but a fantastic listen.

reapercgscNot reliable: a rebuttalI can assure Mr. Jones that the host is maybe the most gentlemanly man I have ever met. He cautions against the “jump on and cheer Napoleon bandwagon gang,” but does so with a wink. Zack and I are close; I am from the US and nothing he has ever said do I find insulting to America or the Army in which I taught officers for two decades. Perhaps one might pose him questions and test his mettle before slamming him on this forum.
-
Jonesy8888Not reliableI am in what the host calls the middle ground on Napoleon. I was surprised when the very first thing the host did was put down the people who love Napoleon. Ok, maybe the host has a personal issue there. Then the host, who is not from the US, insulted my country. I’m a refugee to the US from a prison state, and you can just take your anti-Americanism and you know what you can do with it. Still kept listening for a while though all credibility evaporated. Interesting material, nothing special presentation. Tuning out because I believe the host himself is way too emotional, and probably cannot be trusted not to spin the past to his liking.
-
WorldMusicMamaGreat topicsI heard Zack speak at the Chalke Valley History Festival where he delivered a tour de force 50 minute talk on the Peninsular War. He was so entertaining and informative. This carries through on the podcast with a rich panoply of topics. If you like We Have Ways of Making You Talk, this podcast is for you.
-
societyhillmomFascinatingZack's voice and humor are ever-so entertaining. I really enjoy the history of this podcast and learning some insights during each episode. The Napoleonic era has always intrigued me and this show is interesting and I always walk away with some knew knowlege.
-
Ten Hands One HomeEnlist or starveThis podcast has come across the pond and examines the Napoleonic period with the proper nuance and finesse of a true British historian. The start of the 19th century was marked with hostility between France and England. The host humorously apologizes for boring the listener with phenomenal detail, yet clearly honors that these are not casual listeners. No apologies needed. Those who dive into this subject are choosing to transport their minds into a gruesome battle and less civilized time. As with most historical events, one must sit with the discomfort for any chance to learn from it.
-
P ZemjanisFantastic PodcastExcellent podcast that covers a dizzying array of nearly all things of the Napoleonic era. A must for any enthusiast of the time period.

Fred FurdVolume too lowAwesome podcast in breadth and scope. Only one thing,, a lot of episodes are hard to hear on my iPhone or thru headphones even at full volume. I had to unsubscribe, sadly, since I can’t hear half the episodes.
