Paleo Nerds

126

A Paleo Nerd is a grown-up who still has the child-like wonder and love for dinosaurs, fossils, science, and paleontology. Paleo Nerds follows Alaskan artist, Ray Troll, and his friend ventriloquist David Strassman, as they host exciting interviews with paleontologists, scientists and fellow paleo nerds from around the world. They take what would’ve been a boring science class and turn it into an exciting and extremely informative party.

To much political nonsense not enough science
I love this show for the scientific side but the ridiculous amounts of controversial political opinions being force fed as facts is just so upsetting and completely pulls me out of the immersion of the podcasts topics If I wanted a political podcast I’d go listen to a political podcast I come here for science not politics stick to the animals

This Podcast lives up to its Title!
My brother and I are life long PaleoNerds and we LOVE this podcast! Ray and Dave host a variety of great guests and dive into every nook-and-cranny of Deep Time. This is a knowledgeable, funny, and captivating podcast, that everyone—whether a Blossoming Paleontologist or Paleo Nerd— should definitely listen to.

    Really fun podcast
Super fun podcast. The guests are awesome and it makes pretty complex scientific concepts accessible to everyone!

    Good show bad politics
I enjoy hearing everything about things paleo. They say that opinions are not facts yet they act as if their opinions are facts. Stick to dino's. Also it's ok to eat meat.

The BEST Podcast of it’s kind
I found this podcast about a year ago while coincidentally, in process to move to Newport, Oregon & I found the episode, cruising the fossil coastline to be excellent and good information for someone who lives here. All of these episodes are wonderful, detailed, Funny & informative with great guests and topics. R & D: Please keep doing more.

    Good
A good podcast- love it- but why are you so bent on disproving creationism? I don’t believe in traditional creationism myself, but also think that it is not moral to try to disprove the religions of others.

    Paleo Nerds
I discovered Paleo Nerds last month and binged on it. So very well done by two very talented guys deftly interviewing a range of different expert scientists. I’m now circling back to hear it again. For this 70+ year old paleo nerd, it’s re-sparked a fascination I thought long gone. A great example of science for laymen.

A whole new world of fun!
I’m just absolutely thrilled about this podcast! For me, paleo started as a kid with my Dad and I gluing some glacial worn rocks, in the assemblage of a T-Rex, on a piece of paneling. I watched Land of the Lost - and and was enticed by the “realistic” magical world of clay dinos and plaster volcanos. And I will never forget Dad hauling us all in the Jimmy with pop-up camper in tow to the magical Black Hills of SD! But on a more serious note, you guys have stoked a fire in me to look at paleo in a methodical, scientific way, and that makes all the difference. I can’t help to share this knowledge with my boys. I’ve hauled them around in my conversion van all over the Midwest, and we’ve traveled through the Devonian of Iowa, Ordovician of MN, and the the Late Cretaceous in the Pembina Gorge of ND…holy cow, this is fun! Thanks guys - Steve

    Fantastic Podcast
As a person who has always been interested in dinosaurs, fossils, and pretty much anything prehistoric, this podcast has been a great listen and continues to fuel my curiosity. The hosts are both funny and knowledgeable and they get great guests who provide insight on absolutely fascinating topics. I look forward to each new episode! Can’t wait for more!

Laid back access to the paelo world
I wanted some easy access to learn more about our Earth history and fossil hunting, so I searched for a podcast and this one hit the spot! Ray Troll is a famous cartoonist specializing on fish puns and illustrated some super cool paleo books. The interview style is super chill and personal, without fear of details and without so much of the patronizing "let me teach you" style you find in other "science communication".

Paleo Nerds is fun & fascinating!
What started out as a pandemic project for the hosts, Paleo Nerds is one of my favorite science podcasts. I appreciate the humor, the knowledge, & the range of experts & topics. As a science educator, I use some episodes as assignments, especially b/c Dave makes sure terms are defined and explained for the general public. My college students all remark on the energy & enthusiasm of the guests & hosts. You guys are doing an excellent job of promoting science in a fun way and bringing scientists to life by breaking down stereotypes. Thank you! I’m excited for Season 3.

    My favorite podcast!
Yes, I am a paleo nerd! I learn something new with every episode. Awesome guests, and so fun to listen to these guys nerd out. I laugh every time I hear the mispronunciation/“wrong again” buzzer. So relatable! Thanks for making a great show, Ray and Dave. I’m a huge fan!

I never was a paleo nerd, but...
...this amazing podcast is not just about paleontology! There’s a lot of that, and their topics and guest experts have all been great. However, these guys are so eclectic both within and beyond biology that there is something for anybody who has any kind of interest in the natural world. Their knowledge is rock solid, and I always learn something. I’m such a happy listener!

Great podcast for those that love fossils!
I am a Paleo Nerd and I love this podcast! They have great guest and dive into each subject at just the right amount to keep it interesting without needing a PHD. I’ve always been a fan of Ray’s art and books and Dave adds humor and ask the questions that we are all afraid to ask. Thanks for getting me through the pandemic!

    Fantastic blasts from the past!
This terrific podcast series will widen your horizons, make you laugh, and fill you in on the fascinating history of Planet Earth. Listen while you’re driving, cooking, hanging out—each episode is informative and fun, with technical terms explained and a sense of wonder coming through from both hosts.

    Politics
First time listener and I was really enjoying the episode with Jack Horner up until the last 15ish minutes of the podcast. It became political and anti-religion. One of the hosts kept making comments that were in very poor taste. I’m not sure if they were just jokes that fell flat or if he was being insensitive. I’ll give the podcast another chance and update my review if my mind changes. However, listening for a first time, I’m not overly impressed since the topic of dinosaurs steered into politics and religion.

The PaleoNerds Make Ancient Life Fun For Everyone!
This is a great podcast weaving entertainment and humor with the fascinating world of paleontology. It’s obvious that Ray and Dave are PaleoNerds that love learning about ancient life adding to their extensive knowledge of the subject. Through the podcast I feel like I know them well and would love to share an Alaska Amber on the dock in Ketchikan some day! But the real fun starts when they interview other Nerds who are super excited about their science and are anxious to share. The questions allow the listener to get to know the guests and Ray and Dave guide us through each guest’s nerdiness while providing current research and state of the science. They always wrap up with some standard questions that I am always anxious to hear how these scientists will answer - what is their favorite fossil/find and how do we promote science - the answers from the guests are always thoughtful and informative. Thanks Ray and Dave for putting this together and I look forward to many more!

Just the antidote we need right now.
This podcast is just what we need, a reminder that there are two things we should always keep in mind: 1) That this too shall pass, and the insanity of our current time is a blip in the geologic time scale and 2) That humor is the best lens through which to view whatever time frame we happen to find ourselves in. Awesome work, guys! Keep em coming!!!
  • Hecate14
Great fun about dinosaurs and fossils
Listening to these nerds you will be amazed at their knowledge of all things paleo and how well they can keep up with the experts. Who remembers what happened millions of years ago? These guys do! There’s enough entertaining conversation and humor to make you want to hear the next episode.

    Excellent
Ray and Dave’s excitement never flags as they tell their breathtaking story. There is grandeur in their view of the past that takes a fresh look at the different parts of deep time. Excellent guests share their excitement of the paleo world.

    The rise of the Paleonerd
The world is full of unappreciated people who just love fossils. Now there is a podcast so you can meet this elite corps of paleopeeps. It took an artist and a ventriloquist to pull it off.
  • Mduros
    Love this show!
Long time Ray Troll fan and admirer here! And paleo nerd. This was a pleasant discovery to see on his site! Looking forward to more shows!

    Episode 1
Like the great road shows of the 40’s and 50’s, enjoy the ride with Ray and David as they divulge their first experiences with the engaging discovery of the paleo world. I enjoyed the fun sound effects too!
  • Ketchikanfan
    Accessible and entertaining
Loved that these two giants in their respective fields stepped away from their typical forms of interaction (no images and no puppets) to discuss their shared passion for all things paleo. It was a treat to listen in on what was clearly a conversation between two well informed and enthusiastic raconteurs who have great respect and liking for one another. Subscribe to this one, folks.
  • DJF747
    Awesome for non-paleo listener
Very cool new podcast. Am not really into dinosaurs but checked out the Kirk Johnson ep. To my surprise, I couldn’t stop listening - super interesting stories that sucked me in. Will listen to the rest for sure.

Scientifically sound with a dash of humor
OK, perhaps more than a dash! Loved this entertaining show, the hosts are not only scientifically well versed, they are also warm and engaging. The second episode with Dr. Johnson from the Smithsonian is a home run! Can’t wait for the next episode. Cool music too!

    Great Podcast
Luckily for me I’m a bit of a nerd myself. But nothing! Nothing like these guys! I thought I knew my shyte but Dave and Ray have opened my eyes to the unprecedented amount of information that has been gleaned over the last hundred years especially. And the fact that they’re both so eloquent in their description of all things past, their knowledge of every era, and their humor makes this podcast a revelation. Thanks boys,I hope these podcasts are able to be found a million years from now.
