Scoundrel: History's Forgotten Villains

1,085
History #217

History consists of heroes and villains (and, I suppose everything in between)... but it's usually the villains who are the most interesting: Their flaws, their quirks, the voids in their hearts that force them to do the unthinkable. These are the characters that fascinate us, that pull us in, that compel us to watch and don’t let us look away. And these are the characters that Scoundrel: History’s Forgotten Villains is all about.

Scoundrel, is a new bi-weekly anthology podcast from Kast Media and the award winning creators of Myths & Legends, that tells the stories of the rapscallions through time who were just a little more adept at hiding their evil from historians than others. By joining them on their treacherous journeys, we not only learn about what makes them tick, but more importantly, the times that created them.

Sidney Gottlieb, George Remus, Thomas Blood, James McClintock. They’ve all done horrible things...on varying scales. If there’s anything we can salvage from their misdeeds and incalculable human suffering, it’s the opportunity to use them to elucidate the times they’ve lived… so that we can better understand ourselves.

Hiiiii. I love scoundrel. I think you should do more episodes. If you could that would be great but if you can't then I get it you're probably really busy with myths and Legends and whatever. I've been listening to this for a while but not as much as I used to with makes me sad sometimes but now I watch football and hockey as a 14 year old girl (I don't watch football bc of Taylor swift I watch it bc I'm a bills fan.) anyway I love this podcast sooooo much you should make more.

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST RIGHT NOW!!!!
Hi, my name is Nora, I am 13 years old. I love horror movies and true crime, so this podcast is perfect for me. I love how it talks about stories that aren’t well known, but are more interesting than the ones that are. Not to mention the vivid detail, description, and soothing voices. I’m listening to it as we speak, and I can’t get enough of it. I have been binging it ever since I heard about it on their other podcast (myths and legends) which I also recommend. One thing I really like about it is they show respect to the people they talk about, and don’t joke around about the serious topics, and they don’t state their opinions about the subject only state the facts. I would say that this is a perfect podcast for tweens, teens, and adults, as long as they don’t get scared easily. Even if you do get scared easily, not all episodes are about witches and murderers, some are about people like fake royals, scammers, robbers, etc. I think this is a perfect podcast to listen too, there is something for everyone. Also, to the creators of this podcast, you done good.😊

    Different yet fantastic
I have loved myths and legends for ever. It is a five star rating as well. Shows get five stars from me when I find myself quickly searching for the newest episode and find myself relistining to the old ones to tie me over!

    Hosts
I’m a history buff so I was excited to find this podcast. Unfortunately for me, I just can’t listen to it because of the way the hosts take turns talking. Either of them would be fine on their own but I find the back and forth annoying, unnecessary, and distracting.

    More! More! More! More!
Love these two. It’s just another high quality great podcast. Definitely recommend! I love hearing about these past time baddies that we don’t hear about in history class. Its an interesting look into the lives of those that chose crime, deceit and atrocities to make their way in the world. I especially liked the Wang Ti episode.

    Fascinating
The episodes on George Remus, Hong Xiuquan, Dominica Gulliame, and Ching Shih are truly some of the best podcast episodes I’ve ever heard. I love this podcast. Psst! Hey Jason and Carissa. Just want to let you know I totally respect the need to take a hiatus, especially considering all the hard (and excellent!) work you’re doing for your other podcasts. Take all the time you need—when you’re ready to do more Scoundrel episodes, I’ll be here!

    Fundamentally Flawed
There's a reason campfire storytelling and journalism are different endeavors, and it's super irresponsible to practice the former while claiming the latter. The hosts are strong presenters, but the facts for this show are cherry-picked to fit a prescribed narrative: that's a cavalier and problematic approach to dark history. These were real people with real victims (and we're real audience members) and all of these groups deserve better than dubiously sourced sensationalism.

    Binged!
Every epsisode is really intersting and actually helps me learn about the economic, political, and gender equality situations of the period. if there was a class where I could learn about one wacky person like in this podcast to learn about the history of an entire country [im really bad at the history classes I have to take but this works for me :D] - id be so content. Amazing podcast, I cant wait for more episodes

    Best Podcast
I love to listen to this podcast while I do tasks around my house. It helps me pass time quickly and get things done. It’s also informational, funny, and dramatic, and the way the Weisers interact and tell each story, I can picture what’s happening. So I’d like to thank them for being a wonderful part of my week. “Mahalo Nui Loa (Thank You Very Much)! “

    Say it isn’t so….
I absolutely love this podcast. It has been so interesting to learn about these people from history. What is really fascinating is that I have heard of some of them but, didn’t know their back stories (and now I do). I am very saddened to hear that it’s being put on hiatus. I really look forward to each new episode. Please bring it back quickly!!

Enjoy your time away, but I hope you come back.
I look forward to this podcast every week. It funny, informative, and well researched. I want you guys to enjoy your break because I’m sure making something this great takes significant effort. I also hope you’ve enjoyed making it enough to continue.

    All my support ❤️
So I’m really tired of ppl (especially on Fictional) being rude and mean abt podcasts being on hiatus! I’m sure you guys have a lot of negative words coming at you from people that must’ve traded in their hearts for stones (yes I did that), but I hope y’all know that the rest of us actual fans care a lot about the Weiser family and that we support you! I hope Scoundrel will come back soon, but until then, keep doing what you’re doing ❤️ ☺️

    Nooooo
I just heard that Scoundrel is going on hiatus. This podcast has quickly become one of my favorites. I love the writing. The hosts really bring these scoundrels to life - and I’ve learned so much about these mostly forgotten historical figures. Thanks and I hope this show comes back at some point.

    Gold Standard for Podcasts
My very first podcast was Myths & Legends which I binged on a long car ride trip in 2016. I was hooked on Jason's wonderful storytelling. Then Fictional debuted and it is such a clever way of retelling stories. This podcast has introduced me to little known (till now) characters in history & I really appreciate all the research, preparation and work that Jason & Carissa put into their podcasts. They are the gold standard of podcasts for me and I eagerly await all of their new releases!

I’ve been listening from the beginning and I love hearing about the characters Jason and Carissa find.

I really like this podcast but my favorite episode so far is the Hetty Green one. I had to back up sometimes and replay some times because I didn’t want to miss anything.

    The gold standard of podcasting
I’ve listened to every episode of scoundrels, myths and legends, best of the worst, and fictional, and in my opinion, their level of storytelling, production and entertainment is the gold standard of podcasting that I compare all other shows against. I don’t just enjoy their work, it’s the first set of podcasts that I recommend to friends and family. I look forward to every new release, and hope they stick with it for as long as they love what they do. I know I do. Thanks you guys for keeping us entertained! If you haven’t yet, give it a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

Please do an episode on H.H.Holmes for an original M&L Listener 🥺
Hi Jason and Carissa!! I’ve been listening to Myths and Legends and all of your podcasts since 2016, and I can easily say you are the reason I fell in love with them. I love true crime, and I was SO excited when you introduced Scoundrel. Thank you for this blessing of a podcast… and I have a suggestion for you. You may not know him, but I guarantee his story is sure to send a chill down your spine and any listener’s. In 9th grade I was forced to read a book called “devil in the white city” by Erik Larson. My scoundrel nomination is the main character of that book. His name is Henry Howard Holmes, and he lived during the 1860’s-90’s. He was a con artist, thief, and bigamist; but he’s best known as being America’s first documented serial killer. Holmes was a sadist, a psychopath, and a pathological liar, and its likely that we will never know how many people he killed just because he was that good at destroying the evidence. We do know, however, that Holmes got “satisfied” by controlling his victims in literally every way. I personally think Holmes’ string of atrocities put all the criminals on Scoundrel to shame. The three things that I think makes H.H. Holmes a good episode for your show are 1.) his disregard for human life, 2.) his creepy origin story, and 3.) late 1800’s society and technology in the U.S. made it easy for him to commit and get away with the vast majority of his crimes. I’ve loved the way you portray your characters, and I think H. H. Holmes would be a good challenge, because it’s a little more difficult to find a way to make him sympathetic to others after you know what he did. He’s not just a scoundrel, he’s a monster and a menace to society. I literally had a nightmare about him a week ago, and I’m a grown adult. That being said, it would mean so much to me if you posted an episode about him! Thank you for all you do, I’m off to google butter cats now ;) #m&lreference

    A shady, history delight…
This is one of my favorite podcasts these days. Hearing about these little shady snippets of the past is a delight. The storytellers are, as always, excellent, and the ambiance created by the background noises/music is really well done.

    Getting annoying
I have been a long term listener of myths and legends and was excited to find this new show. The quality of recording and storytelling is good and I have listened to many of the episodes. I have to say though that it’s extremely annoying how almost every single story is bent around the framework that all of history is just men vs women. If I had a penny for every time “powerful men” and “misogyny” is brought up I’d be a rich man. I don’t mean to be insensitive to the fact that equality is an important issue, it is indeed important. But hearing all of history portrayed through a woke lens of how every woman, in every age, was somehow despairing over the inequities of society is ridiculous. One episode literary described being a daughter as “being under the control of a powerful man” aka a dad. Apparently being a father is now something I should be ashamed of because I don’t let my daughter do whatever she wants. It’s a bit absurd. It’s a shame because I could almost really like the show if it weren’t for the CONSTANT obsession the narrative puts on how unfair the world is for women. Just tell the story please. I can turn on the news if I want to be power washed with feminism.

    Excellent podcast, storytelling done right
Hosts have great voices and clever writing - I look forward to this each week!

    Ad placements are jarring
I gave this series 4/5 stars because although I am a big fan of the creators and listen to their other podcasts as well, KAST places ads at multiple points of the episode that do not make sense within the stories for a break to happen. The ad breaks are jarring as well because they come in with no warning, no build up, so it forces you out of the great storytelling environment. I’m not sure if the creators can adjust this, since I’m sure it’s KAST who is in charge of these ads, but I would subscribe to this series if ads were maybe lumped at the beginning or middle of the show, with an introduction to the ad break.

I love the different take on these stories from you guys. Actually I love all the podcasts from you all. Started with myths and legends and now I listen to all.
