Missing Pieces - NPE Life

19

Missing Pieces - NPE Life is a podcast that curates stories of and about people who find out, usually through a home DNA test, that someone in their family tree isn't who they thought. We also tell stories of adoptees who've found lost family, or are looking.  The host, Don Anderson, found out in 2021 that his dad wasn't his dad. It changed his life. All of the sudden the missing pieces fell into place. Our first episode will drop on May 13, 2022.  NPE stands for Not Parent Expected or Non Paternity Event.

    NPE Family
This show along with a few selected others in the same vain have became family to those of us who were lost in the DNA/NPE fog and needed to find our people to help make sense of one of the most emotional upheaval one can experience in their lifetime.

    Enjoyable and interesting show
It’s great listening to these real life stories that aren’t more murders. It’s hard to believe that so many people have to go through this upheaval in their lives. I feel for all of them. None of them deserve this. Don does an excellent job interviewing the people willing to put their stories out there.

    Great stories
I listen to a lot of NPE podcasts and each one has their strengths. The strength of this one is that it is the most entertaining and polished one. It is well made, well edited, and has unique and captivating stories.

Wow! “Missing Pieces” is apropos as a title! Fascinating show!
This show blows me away. To think that you are just living your life for decades, loving your family, raising your kid and all of a sudden, you are hit with a bomb - Your dad isn't your dad and now you have a new brother!! Crazy. DNA results are upending thousands of lives, sometimes with joyful and exciting results, and sometimes with results that can cause a seizemic quake across family bonds. I was introduced to this show on Episode S5 Ep 9 "Pamela - The Reluctant One" and was taken in by the idea of a woman leading a normal life when she gets news that her dad was never her bio dad. Earth-shattering stuff. This episode was so enlightening that it made me question my own heritage and lean toward the idea of getting my own DNA tested. Gulp! What if my family tree is similarly out of whack with my current understanding of who my relatives are! This episode was my entry into the podcast, after which I started downloading the whole back catalogue and listening on my long drives. I love this show because Don's warm, friendly, and curous tone completely engages and get invested in following along and more and more revelations occur during each show. The production feels like NPR, so it's really pro, and the content is riveting... in a slow burn way. Thanks to Don Anderson for creating this show and revealing all the missing pieces that are in subject's lives. Even 20 years ago, this show would have been impossible because the DNA technology wasn't available. But now, these "missing pieces" stories will almost inevitabley be revealed in every family, either directly or by a few degrees of separation. What was a secret is no longer a secret. It's mindboggling that a microscopic piece of seemingly insignificant matter from decades ago, could be such a huge force now in family compoositon and dynamics. Bravo to "Missing Pieces" for bringing this all to light. Keep up the good work!

    Happy Birthday!
I look forward to each of your episodes. There is always something in each episode that speaks to me. Your podcast has helped me navigate through the struggles of being an npe.

    Don’s humor
Clearly (all my nicknames…blah blah) doesn’t have a strong humor bone. I cracked up at how he asked if people had listened to his podcast. Very man on the street vibes. Don is a leader in the NPE community and his kind questions and understanding manner, not to mention perfect podcast voice reach many confused and hurting people. Hey, but thanks for listening! —————————————————————- I wrote this so long ago I can’t remember exactly which episode it was. But I forgot to send it. I went to write another and could delete this, but I don’t want to.😁

Sister, sister Christy and Tara s5 e8
Don did a beautiful job weaving two different sisters’ perspectives together to create a seamless, narrative example of the NPE life experience. My wife and I used to listen to relaxing adult sleep stories at bedtime, but ever since my sister turned me on to the missing pieces pod cast, sleep evades me! The stories are so compelling, I had to add the pod cast to my morning routine instead.

    Amazing, raw, relatable, real
I love how Don really lets his guests speak and be vulnerable, he even cries with them. There’s never any judgement. I love how this is not overly edited and you can really hear the feelings in everyone’s voices and stories. When you are an NPE, you feel like nobody knows what you’re going through but listening to this podcast makes you feel understood. Thank you, Don, for letting me be a part of this wonderful experience!

    Missing Pieces-Binge
"Missing Pieces - NPE Life" stands out as a captivatingand insighfulpodcast that delves into the NPE(Non Parent Expected) and DNA surprisewxperiences. As a late discovery adoptee(LDA), I found myself relating to many of Don's Episodes. The way he shares and explores these deeply personal stories is truly amazing. Each episode offers a heartfeltand insightful look into the lives of those affected, making it a must-listenfor anyone interested in these topics. I must confess my friend Shirley nudged me to listen and I am so glad I did.

Not Bad but Nowhere Near the Best
Most recent episode when he interviews folks at the summit, he asks if they’ve heard his podcast and if they hadn’t, he was clearly annoyed and almost made it seem like they were living under a rock rather than just saying something polite like, “I hope you’ll give it a listen.” He thinks he’s a way bigger deal than he is. There are more thoughtful and kind podcasters out there who know that interviews are not about centering the interviewer.

Truth, empathy, & advocacy for NPE life
No one should be hindered or shamed for seeking where and whom they come from. Don’s compassionate listening, thoughtful interviewing, and professional editing skills weave these important, compelling testimonies into suspenseful, candid stories. The truth will set you free even if it seems unbearable at first.

    I’m not alone!
Don has a way of bringing his guest to the deep stuff quickly. I love the humor he throws in. The NPE’s sound so comfortable sharing. All of our stories are different, but I feel a little piece in each. And Billy Sullivan…I appreciate your vibe! Thanks Lisa for supporting this project with Don. It has helped! 💜

    Each story is very healing.
I found this podcast by accident and have never listened to a podcast before. As an NPE, I have found something relatable in every single episode and I have listened to them all. It’s healing to hear others say words that we can understand in our souls because we to have been there.

    Such a gift.
I’m not only a listener, I was also on one of the episodes. Don is an amazing storyteller and interviewer. I usually shed a few tears during most episodes but it is always cathartic. The stories are captivating and emotional- you don’t have to be an NPE to appreciate this podcast- you just have to like good storytelling!

Your podcast is absolutely fabulous and comforting. Thank you Don, and all who share in their journey. I have listened to each of your episodes and been on two NPE podcasts sharing my story. Wow this podcast hit home
I just listened to Phone call with Mom 1 & 2 …. Can I just say what an incredible conversation between son and Mother. I’m almost speechless as to how well feelings were expressed and as to the high level of self control that was a very mature example of how to talk about late discovery misattributed paternity. Thank you for sharing this raw and private conversation with us. I look forward to hearing more from this guest. *PS I am a NPE struggling to have a relationship with my Mother.
  • Sforbes77

    Thankful
I discovered Don’s podcast one year after discovering my own NPE status. I was struggling, and I had never listened to a podcast before, so I was hesitant. Well, I ended up listening to all 32 episodes in about 10 days. Don is thoughtful, caring, and most importantly, he is relatable. I have learned so much from listening to other people’s experiences. I feel like I just graduated NPE college and I’m about to begin my NPE post grad work. My new reality is not as overwhelming as it once seemed. Thank you to Don, thank you to his wife, and thank you to all those who have been brave enough to share their stories.

This podcast is where I learned the title NPE. I haven’t listened to or read any other NPE material, and I am so glad that I started with Don. He’s tender, relatable, really brings the human experience as it pertains to this revelation of DNA rollercoaster’s.

    Missing Pieces Norwegian Girl
Norwegian Girl was the best NPE/Adoption podcast I think I have ever listened to….and I have been listening for years to many of them from many podcasters. Your editing and the way you stitched this together was actually masterful. Thanks for putting out such a quality podcast about a subject I find very interesting.

Love that I found a place to listen to stories similar to mine- where people just get it! Don does an amazing job holding space for the NPE world. Lots of time (& extras) go into each episode. His conversational voice and facillitating skills remind us we are not alone.

    New NPE
Didn't know what a NPE was until February 11th when I sat here in this very spot, staring at the computer screen showing my DNA test results. I never, EVER in my entire life had any reason to believer my dad was not my dad but he wasn't. But there it was! My sister was only a half sister and I had a bunch of new relatives.
  • Ann Modrock
    I binged them all!!!
I just listened to the whole two seasons of this! I was riveted. So interesting to get to hear how people take this journey to find their birth parents. Its a mystery, a drama and can really get you on the edge of your seat. The host has the coolest attitude. Didn’t even know what an NPE was.
