The Forgotten Exodus

The multi-award-winning, chart-topping Jewish podcast, The Forgotten Exodus, is back for season two. The world has overlooked an important episode in modern history: the 800,000 Jews who left or were driven from their homes in the Middle East and North Africa in the mid-20th century to forge new lives for themselves and future generations. The Forgotten Exodus, a limited podcast series by American Jewish Committee (AJC), explores the important lessons we can learn from this pivotal moment and the little-known Jewish heritage of the Middle East and North Africa. As Jews around the world confront rising antisemitism, hear five new stories of Mizrahi and Sephardi courage, perseverance, and resilience from this transformative and tumultuous period of history for the Jewish people. The world has ignored them. We will not.

an education in sephardic and mizrahi history
having a part in crafting this groundbreaking series has been supremely gratifying. it has allowed me to expand my knowledge of who a jew is. our customs, beliefs, and backgrounds are not all eastern european, matzah balls, and klezmer music. all stories deserve to be seen and heard.

    My father’s story
Thank you for this. Hard to believe it has taken this long for more stories to be shared to the larger Jewish community outside of Israel, but I’m glad it’s happening more now. My father is an Iraqi Jew who went to Israel in 1951 and then the States in 1965. He was perhaps the first Hebrew to Arabic translator in Ben Gurion’s Knesset for the Arab delegates. Much of my family Exodus story is similar to what was shared in this podcast and my experiences are similar to Carol’s in terms of navigating the different boxes we are put in.

    Magical and heartbreaking
Beautifully told narrative of a millennia-old community destroyed. Heartbreaking- but also uplifting to hear the resilience of people who did not live as victims, but rather recreated their lives in Israel. Must listen!

    Untold stories
These stories of Arab Jews often fleeing their homes under duress are largely untold. It is the duty of students of history and all who care about the immigrant and refugee experience to share these stories. Thank you to the podcast creators and guests for carrying this message.
