One Song

51

On each episode of ONE SONG, friends Diallo Riddle ( Emmy-nominated star and creator of HBO Max’s South Side and IFC’s Sherman’s Showcase) and Blake "LUXXURY" Robin (Music Producer & TikTok creator) will hilariously break down ONE SONG from the pop music canon that you know - or need to know - but have never heard quite like this.

    A joy to listen to
Great chemistry between the two. I always find new music to love listening to them
  • Half listener, nothing heavy
    Fascinating and smart!
I am not cool, but these guys make me feel cool when I’m listening to them. Yay for that! Deep dive into music history with some musical genius nerds. Love it!

If I had a music podcast
This is one of the most enjoyable and insightful podcasts on music or otherwise. The interplay between the Diallo and Luxxxxxxury (whisper: interpolation) is as joyful as is their love of music, often tying back songs to their own lives. They continually grab ideas from my brain and say them out loud. It’s truly addicting.

Great podcast for the whole family
I am a music fan of *almost* all genres from afar but know absolutely NOTHING about creating music or music history. That being said I am loving hearing the layers of some of my favorite songs and being introduced to new songs and artists. The best part of this podcast for me, is that we can listen with our 8 and 10 year old kids and I’m not worried about the content. My brother is crazy into creating music and my kids enjoy playing music with him and this podcast is deepening their love and interest in all things musical. Love the variety of song choices, the banter and the musical knowledge. Side note, if you don’t like the song…skip the episode and save the complaints for your journal

    Bingeing
I was so sad when Southside ended and went searching for more of Diallo Riddle’s material. I’ve since been bingeing this podcast: it warms my gen x music nerd heart and introduces me to new music. I love how eclectic it is and told all my friends.

    Love listening to the stems
I love when they play the isolated stems of these iconic songs so you can hear little bits of the production you otherwise wouldn’t hear or notice. Okay now that I’ve left a nice review: pleeeeeeasse do Marjorie by Taylor Swift which has her opera singer grandmother’s vocals in the stems!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    Great listen
The podcast offers a unique way to dive in to some notable songs. Diallo and Luxxury are great hosts.

If you love music, it’s a must listen
I have never written a podcast review before, but this podcast is so good I must. Great information, great history, and these two really do a great job at hosting. I have gone back and listened to every single podcast in their feed because I love it so much. Thank you to everyone involved in making this.

    Makes my day
I love love love listening to these two. Most podcasts I listen to at night, but I listen to One Song in the morning. This show can lift my spirits for the day. It’s about music, the music industry, race & culture, and it’s low key about friendship… and yes, they do know hiphop.
  • Burrlover
    Love the podcast but….
Ugh. When is Luxxxury back? Also, you guys don’t need guests. Diallo and Luxxxury carry the show on their own.

    Okay Podcast
One Song is an okay podcast as long as they are not talking about Hip Hop. It is super clear they are spectators from afar and not true Hip Hop heads. I do not think they are qualified in any way to speak about Hip Hop authoritatively.

Let these guys make your playlists
I love all of the facts about how these songs link back to other songs. It’s also really great to make playlists related to that “One Song” that you’re obsessed with because they discuss all of these original songs and covers that would not have popped up on your radar (ex: hearing about a 12 minute edit of Jolene and falling in love with it!) Keep it up, guys!

    Engaging
I have learned a lot from this show. Excellent breakdown of songs. Keep up the great work!

    The brilliance of friendship
Love this podcast! The two host have infectious chemistry and impeccable taste! I find myself whispering “interpolation” more and more I can’t recommend this show enough!

    Everything is iconic I guess?
Initially was a great podcast but now just feels repetitive.

Loving this pod and all the new music I learn about!!
If you are a music lover who also loves facts and new music this is the pod for you!

    Ultimate song guide experience
Impressive next level music podcast you need to listen to. Absolutely love this podcast that explores every conceivable aspect of a song in a fun way. If you are interested in listening how songs were created and the origins/influences of where they come from these two do the best deep dives you will find. They have great rapport with one another and given you high level insight that is not pretentious it’s down to earth and makes you feel like you are in the room with two friends, communicating their enjoyment and interest. I listened to the Tears For Fears and Blondie episodes and although I thought I knew a good amount about the music this podcast blew me away.

Hanging out with (music geek) friends!
This podcast is a joy. Painstakingly researched, yet casual and playful. They tackle hard problems in music (race, gender, lawsuits, breakups) and yet laugh and savor how music makes us feel. I learn remarkable things about songs that I’ve heard a thousand times AND learn about deeper cuts and tracks that I missed. It’s incredible that we get to share their friendship.

    Love this!
I don’t know the first thing about music theory. This is so different from the podcasts I usually listen to but I loved this. The Radiohead episode is great.

    Great podcast!
This podcast has always something new to learn and I love that! The way they break down the songs is always done in an interesting way and keeps me coming back for more!

Good energy, but wandering & indulgent
Unlike the excellent, efficient Song Exploder, this podcast is not actually about One Song. Instead, the show’s hosts use a particular song as a jumping-off point into a wandering series of personal stories about the hosts experiences with various musical eras and genres, maybe to impress each other and their own social media followers. But if you can get through the “look how cute and nerdy we are about music” chit-chat, the payoff is getting to hear some interesting details when they finally play the isolated song stems of the “one song” at the end of the episode.

    So good
Love learning all about the music.

    Amazed every single episode
HOW ARE YOUR EARS SO GOOD?!!! HOOOOWWW!!!! I am really just so shocked at hearing something new in songs I listen to all the time.

    Jimmy Jam was great!
I loved the Control deep dive and would kill to hear Jimmy back on the pod. Ideally you would go album by album through Janet's work but that's just my opinion!

    Jolene needs something
Huge fan of this podcast but you guys got this one wrong. Three males who are self-proclaimed “not country experts” commenting on one of the most painful, vulnerable and powerful female songs of all time was actually difficult to listen to. This episode needed a woman’s perspective, probably a female country artist, to round out the conversation about sexism in the industry and what this song means to women’s. It’s was truly infuriating to hear three men talk about sexism in music without a female in the room. Andy Richter is awesome, but he shouldn’t have had a seat at this table.

    Love this!
This has been so fun to listen to. My music game has leveled up. How about the band Redbone and their song “ Come and Get Your Love” ? I’d like to learn about that :-)
  • BVK
I’m ALL IN for the deep dive!
Amazing show- I love digging into the minutiae of the history and trivia about music history, but Diallo & Luxxury go WAAAAY deeper & dissect tracks to reveal things you never knew were in there. Discovering lots of new music here, and discovering new things about the music I already though I knew. My new favorite music podcast!

Great show for everyone from novice music lovers to professional music nerds. Both guys are funny and super thoughtful, definitely recommended!

    Stop Talking over the Other
I’m a musician, songwriter and indie producer. This podcast is nearly perfect because i nerd out on the type of details you gents share. Both of you are cultured and smart. However, I often can’t listen to an entire episode or at least back to back. I’m very challenged by how excessively Dialo talks over Luxxery when something is being highlighted. I’m attempting to hear and absorb but there’s the constant interruption. It almost appears attention starved. Perhaps, I come from a background of manners. Perhaps, this is the show’s design. But on occasion, please let me enjoy some of the details without the over excessive interruptions. I love this show and you dudes are great. Thank you
  • Mars3833
    It’s always educational and fun
When can you say that? It’s fun to learn the histories of the songs Diallo and Luxxury choose each week. And they always provide interesting details about the song, artists, and culture. If you’re a fan of music, this is the podcast for you.
  • Bullitt427
    Decent Concept
Saw this as reels on IG, which being 30sec to a minute or so seemed fun. However an hour length podcast doesn’t seem to work with weird tangents and off topic quips. You end up with about 10 minutes of BTS of the song and 50 minutes of fluff. Also, knowing a thing or 2 about Metallica, the MoP episode was atrociously inaccurate so it makes me question the others I have listened to. Again decent concept but seems to fall short
  • jearly
Really fun show for music lovers
I love music and have always enjoyed breakdowns of music, especially the sample origin stories. This show goes even further into the history/origin story of the band, influences on other songs, etc. One suggestion guys: Play the song in full at the end of the episode. I have most of these tunes but, for the wider audience, it’d be nice to hear the full song after you break it down.

Perfect Show For Us Music Nerds
Love the whole concept of this podcast, taking a singular song, giving us backstory on the artist and what led them to said song, and completely dissecting it. Just finished listening to the De La Soul Buddy episode. I think it’s my favorite episode to date. I will like to correct Diallo on something from said episode: Breakadawn samples MJ’s I Can’t Help It (which in my opinion, is one of his best songs), from Off The Wall, not Thriller. P.S, I’m one of the many people who feel Off The Wall is MJ’s best album.

    Laugh and learn
My fave podcast! Love all the background info and how they break a sound down to its very essence. So entertaining, I’ll listen no matter What song they’re deciphering. It’s ALL good!
  • scumark
    Excellent song breakdowns
LuXXury and Diallo take one song each week and explain the backstory and artist influences. Then, LuXXury shares the song stems (individually-tracked instruments) and digs into the music and vocals themselves. It’s a great show. YOU WILL LEARN THINGS!
  • avanth_garde
    Love this show!!
The former music theory student in me loves it. Very accessible while maintaining nuance. I learn so much and I love the conversational style.

For music nerds and the nerd curious
Diallo and Luxxury know how to squeeze all of the most interesting bits of juice and pulp from well loved songs and artists you might think you know everything about. It’s hard not to DM them after with 101 more songs you want them to talk about next! Diallo’s metal journey on the Metallica episode reminded me of my own. More genre journeys too, please!

    Good show
An amazing podcast and one song that would be amazing is notion by the rare occasions

Love this show! Fix the editing!
The wonky editing really irks me! its hard to ignore and it’s such a disservice to the amazing content!

Perfect for music fans w eclectic taste
This is a really great podcast for music nerds and newbies a like! Even for songs that you may not know, the excitement from Dialo and Luxxury about music is contagious and you could learn to love a know genre. For songs you could be sick of you’ll get to hear in a completely new way usually. I send this show to anyone I know that loves music

    These dudes are Legit
I’ve been DJing as long as both of these guys, and listening to them riff on each song is like hanging with a homey and nerding out over music. Their Daft Punk episode is my favorite so far, and when Luxxury plays the samples at the end it’s next level aficionado that only true DJs do. This has become one of my favorite podcasts and I’m glad Luxxury is getting the love he deserves. He’s a gem!
  • Johnny Crush
    Love, Love, Love!
I freakin’ love this show! I love Diallo and Luxxury is my musical soulmate. Nerding out and deconstructing samples as well as traditional instrumental parts is bliss to me!

    A musical rabbit hole
I’ve caught some clips of One Song on Reels and was struck by the deeper knowledge of the modern history of music as it unfolds. It led me to seek out the actual podcast and it was an enjoyable listen that pushed me down a rabbit hole of new (to me) old music and new new music. I used to find new music by reading the artists and producers acknowledged in CD booklets. This show actually draws all of these connections for me. I look forward to hearing more.
