Black Box

At some point in the past few years, humanity collided with a new kind of intelligence. And things are getting strange. People are being accused of crimes by algorithms; falling in love with digital beings; pioneering new ways to fight old diseases; turning to machines for comfort in their worst moments, and using artificial intelligence to commit – and hide from – terrible crimes. The Guardian’s Michael Safi investigates the story of a technology so complex that its own creators have no idea what it is thinking, and captures a snapshot of the era when people first made contact with AI • Black Box was selected as one of Apple Podcasts Favourites of 2024

    Super Informative Reporting
Loved this deep dive into AI. VERY informative series. When will there be more?

    Strong start, but weak overall
With three episodes to go, I’m not sure I’ll finish. The series’ foundational episodes were very compelling. After that, we were hit with an unimpressive “investigation” and overmuch anecdotal episodes. It feels like this was prepared on a deadline, and was rushed more and more each episode.

    Fascinating and thought provoking.

    Silly and Uninformed.
Among the many shortcomings, there seems to be no grasp of the extent of plagiarism involved, the breach of copyright needed to pump info into these programs. No mention of the colossal amounts of energy needed to run the computers or the vast amounts of computational power required. And all to end up with the anodyne garbage of ChatGPT. No doubt AI has its uses, but helping to blow up the current tech-bro bubble isn’t helpful. Production is professional.

    Eye Opening
Wondering if given such important information on early breast cancer detection would it be possible to include a link for adding mammogram results to the data base or for people like me who just had a mastectomy to be given the opportunity to use the system on the other side of the breast? Terrific job with each topic

Thank you. Clear, concise and somewhat comforting. I appreciate the discussion of the many points of view, and the possibilities. Also, I could listen to Michael Safi all day long; the clarity of his voice makes listening to the podcasts he speaks on a pleasure.

    Michael Safi
I love the voice of Michael Safi. His podcast and black box mysterious series lifted me out of sad mood and possibly depression. I listen at work and I don’t want the work finish. 😊🤗

Sensationalist, fear mongering, ok... but makes 1 giant error
Mispronounces the subject of investigation at every mention, even after being corrected (in episode 2). This just really bothered me because the point of "ClothOff", as you yourselves illustrate, is to create images of people with *clothes off*. Nobody is clamoring for whatever "Cloth Off" is; "I would love to see what the dining table looks like with the 'Cloth off'." — said nobody ever, obviously. Enormous journalistic failure that persists even after someone associated with the nefarious application refers to it, correctly, as "ClotheOff" (in pronunciation, not spelling). I would like to see a correction issued for this entire episode, unless, of course, The Guardian and journalists behind Black Box do not care at all about accuracy or integrity in journalism!
