Not only is this a carefully crafted, wonderfully written podcast that weaves intriguing paranormal ideas with emotional personal insights, but Hatem does it in a way that makes me look forward to long car trips so I can turn to my wife and say, “Ooh, can we listen to Rich on the way?” Then she inevitabily says one of two things: either she says “sure” and the drive is fascinating and thought provoking, or she says “I already listened to it without you” and we sit in stony silence as my resentment blossoms.

Day one listener here. When I first started this podcast I was not prepared for the blend of a lifelong passion for the paranormal and the openness of a lifetime of emotional ups and downs. I love this show, and re-listening to the first episode with you talking about being a confused socially awkward and “weird”young child really hit home. Look forward to every single episode

I love this show and the way Richard tells a story! It is the perfect amount of spooky, information, amazing writing and story telling. Richard knows how to talk! One or two episodes in and Richard’s podcast bumped up to #1 of my favorite podcasts. I quickly binged Season 1 and have continued to savor each episode. I’m a huge paranormal fan; but this podcast is so much more. Richard shares himself; and in doing so, reminds us with his generous vulnerability, of our own life’s journey. Not to mention, he wrote the script for one of my very favorite movies. Now I know the man who provided me one of the scariest couple of moments of my life. I had watched The Mothman Prophecies for a second time the night before, without remembering that I’d be heading to visit friends the next day at a campsite in Maryland where I needed to cross a very high and long bridge from the Virginia side to get there. And then again. At night. To get home. Driving over large bridges is already something that brings me to the precipice of panic. On this day - and again, later that night, in the dark, my three young daughters in the back seats in various stages of sleepiness after a day of swimming and crabbing and playing; I drove over that bridge, equally praying and envisioning Point Pleasant’s movie version of the bridge collapse the whole way across the Potomac River. It’s seriously a pleasure to meet you, Richard Hatem!!

I started listening to this podcast from the beginning and absolutely love it! Each podcast covers a different book on the paranormal. The book’s discussed are fascinating by themselves but the best part is the hosts discussion of the book along with his personal interaction with the book and why it is important to him. He’s open and honest and funny and touching. If you enjoy the paranormal even just a tiny bit I bet you’ll love this!!

There is no man more insufferable that Richard Hatem in the paranormal world. I don't know why he thought his love life was that interesting. I literally skip anything I see him on now. He strikes me as a narc and I know too much about them. Too self congratulatory. I bet he listens to his own podcast in the shower if you know what i mean.

Brilliant writing through and through. Rich takes the listener on a winding journey through his paranormal book collection. Part mystical reflection. Part hilarious memoir. It’s a spooky box of chocolates… ya never quite know what you’re gonna get with Rich.

As a dentist, I know 2 things: coffee is not great for your teeth, and word of mouth is the best way to promote something. I don't personally drink it cause it makes my hands jittery when precision is needed. But on a cold day, when you got up early, schedule is full, you had to be kicked out of bed, etc… you order a coffee and things start falling into place. The first sip starts warming your insides, your hands feel it too. The caffeine does it’s job. Maybe it’s not to everyone’s taste; some may not like the flavor. But on a cold morning, surely we all heart coffee. RHPB is just like that. It usually starts slowly; it’s not meant for chugging. It’s makes me smile; it makes me laugh. It soothes me but also wakes me up. I forget why I’m consuming it it sometimes (“which book is he talking about?” goes thru my head a bunch as I’m driving). Is it good for you? I think so. Is it bad for you? Not in small quantities. Does it yellow your teeth or make you go pee? Maybe…? It’s my favorite podcast. I’m making a patient wait while I take my time to write this review. If Richard (or Tess or anyone at AL N) reads this, you have a huge fan in Mexico. I only wish I had an easier way to explain what it’s about, because on the day that I hear an episode, I feel like I tell all my patients about it. I’m sure people initially found the taste of coffee strange; a true acquired taste. But just like RHPB, it’s so good for that no one can get enough of it! Feliciades!

I’ve always enjoyed Rich’s style in any guest appearances he’s on, he’s very funny, has great stories, and always seems to have the book being discussed in some rare edition. But he’s also an extremely good writer. Well, that should be no surprise, it’s his career and all, but man is it on display here.

I love the story line juxtaposition. Extremely personal and engaging but doesn’t cross the line into self indulgence.

Never heard of Richard Hatem? I get it; not everyone keeps up with the writers and producers of some of their favorite shows. So, what does this Hatem guy do with his spooky bookshelf? Well, he, um, kinda gives a summary of a selected book, while interspacing it with some random story from his life, usually relating it to the book in some vague way, like, “oh, let me tell you how reading this book relates to my experiences going through puberty” or some such nonsense. Now, why would YOU want to hear any of this? Well, it just works. That’s the best I can give you. Mr Hatem is a wordsmith, first class, with a sharp intellect, good humor, and steady, smooth voice that all work together and make this podcast that, to me, at least, sounds ludicrous, actually work and has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts out there. It is well worth your time to give it a listen. I highly doubt you’ll be disappointed.

This isn't just a podcast, its an experience. Richard guides you through his paranormal bookshelf and peppers in a generous amount of well written storytelling and humor. It is not to be missed.

This podcast is a pleasant change from your typical spooky podcast and I love it! I appreciate the expertly-woven prose that take me back to my own life experiences! Bravo!

It’s 11:30 on a Monday morning and I’m silently weeping at my desk. These days I have any number of reasons to be crying, but I was not expecting a podcast about paranormal books to be one of them. And why am I crying? Because the host of the show, screenwriter Richard Hatem, has just started talking about his divorce. I’m a year into the divorce process. I say process because that is absolutely what the end of a long-term marriage is, practically and personally, especially when that marriage includes children. The mental fortitude it takes to soldier through court dates, legal counseling sessions, custody discussions, and settlement negotiations is exhausting. And then there’s the personal process of rediscovering oneself and defining oneself outside of the deceased relationship. Sometimes, unintentionally, a person loses parts of their individuality being part of a unit for such a long time. Back at my desk, I’m deftly brushing away tears as I listen to episode 2 of Hatem’s podcast: “Richard Hatem’s Paranormal Bookshelf”. This was not what I expected when I started the series. I first became aware of Richard Hatem through a different podcast, Astonishing Legends, hosted by Scott Philbrook and Forrest Burgess. I was aware of Hatem’s art before I was aware of the artist. (And isn’t that the highest praise that can be bestowed upon a creator?) Two of Hatem’s works significantly influenced my interest in the unexplained: the 2002 film The Mothman Prophecies and the sadly short-lived tv series Miracles. Over the years, Richard has been a frequent guest on Astonishing Legends and each time has been a delight. So when I learned Hatem was creating his own podcast centered around the paranormal books that have influenced him I was ecstatic. I anticipated each episode would be a sort of book review presented in Richard’s characteristic blue humor and charm. And the podcast is partially just that. But it’s so much better than just that. Ironically, a show ostensibly about paranormal events focuses much more on normal, everyday experiences that nearly everyone can relate to. The particular episode that has triggered my tearful reaction is called “Love in an Alien Purgatory”, a title taken from the book written by Farah Yurdozu about the enigmatic extraterrestrial themed paintings created by artist David Huggins. Huggins purportedly had a decades long romance with an alien woman and he painted his encounters. As I slowly recover my composure, giving furtive glances towards my coworkers to ensure no one has seen my mini meltdown, Hatem continues to weave the book review with his personal experiences of love and heartbreak. Perhaps my reaction is a sign I need more therapy, a subject also discussed by Hatem. Or maybe my reaction is simply relief. Relief in knowing that others have endured the pain I’m currently experiencing and have nevertheless persevered. Hatem’s storytelling skills and vulnerability are what make this podcast so special. And while the show’s episodes cover topics ranging from alien encounters to haunted houses, the core narrative is always a flawed human being navigating life just like the rest of us.

Interesting but why is this Podcast rated clean? The F bomb is very liberally sprinkled throughout the narrative. Why is this necessary?!

Interesting topics and the host is obviously a talented storyteller. Unfortunately, he has a religious devotion to unproven paranormal pseudoscience and uses strawman (and at times insulting) and exaggeratedly negative arguments towards those of us who want…. ya know…. actual proof.

Is very enjoyable, well told and relatable. A podcast I find myself responding out loud to, “Right?” “Me too” “Absolutely” and a few lol’s. Well done Richard.

I enjoy this as much as listening to the recordings of my younger self in therapy. Less cringey, still cringey. Richard is a live wire full of fragmented bits of enlightenment. Looking forward to where this comet lands.

Richard’s storytelling and analysis are top-notch. I love this show and cannot wait to hear more. Best of all, unlike Astonishing Legends, there aren’t 200 ad breaks per episode. Keep up the great work, Richard! Mothman rules!

I have been a consumer of podcasts since 2002 when they were in their infancy and the number of new shows is staggering so at this point feel I have to be quite discerning in giving a new one a chance. I was introduced to Richard Hatem via the Astonishing Legends podcast a few years ago but didn’t actually dive into his new endeavor until recently and once I dove I could barely come up for a breath! This podcast is a work of art; it is completely satisfying and gorgeous and 100% destination listening for me. Thank you for doing what you do. -LT

I am in love with this podcast. I thoroughly appreciate the deep dive into emotional traumas and the experience of navigating them through adulthood. I find myself shaking my head yes to so many things Richard says regarding this. I love the storytelling. I love the raw and open look into another persons life. It’s a perfect theater of the mind mixed with how the paranormal can and does infiltrate your life in ways you would never expect. Keep it up!

Those of us close to his generation will smile with recognition and nostalgia, and those who appreciate his body of work will be fascinated by a look behind the scenes into his writer’s mind. Above all, it’s his willingness to be vulnerable that shines through as he adroitly crafts his riveting tales. It’s easy to imagine him as an old friend. He was always my favorite Astonishing Legends guest, and it’s wonderful that he now has a platform that is all his own.

Rich is an excellent storyteller. He weaves his personal life into the books he’s discussing. I was wary of this show, as I didn’t like him much in Astonishing Legends. However, he shines in this podcast. Give it a listen!

The stories are sometimes personal, sometimes legend (ish) non fiction, at times edgy and always keep me anxious to hear the next episode.

You really can tell when you’re in the hands of a talented writer. Richard Hatem weaves recollections and descriptions of paranormal books with autobiographical stories of where he was in life when he read those books. And every time, he makes the two threads come together in a satisfying way.

Always enjoyed you on Astonishing Legends and now there is even more to love.! Why am I so surprised you’re such a good storyteller, after all you are a screenwriter! A book , some history and snippets of your life. Delightful! Keep it coming please.

I started listening to you when you were on astonishing legends and I found your episodes to be my favorites. I was thrilled to find out you started your own podcast. It has become one of my very favorites and if you do a Patreon I’m so there! You are the first podcast review I have ever written.

I had never understood what the deal was with podcasts. I didn’t even know where to find one. Why would anyone want to listen to a podcast when there’s so much great music out there?! After changing jobs to one that now includes a 30 minute commute, I found my way to podcasts and Richard’s Paranormal Bookshelf and I am riveted. First of all, I love the format. It’s just one guy and he’s telling stories; stories about his life, his loves, his thoughts and feelings and weaving it all in with his fascination for all things paranormal. I find myself completely immersed in the world he paints as he calls into focus specific fashion trends, songs and household relics that evoke nostalgia for decades gone by when kids were feral and parents were Charlie Brown voices droning on from somewhere in the background. Oh and there’s plenty of talk about weird, paranormal stuff that is fun to contemplate and wonder if you fashion yourself a skeptic or a believer. I’m not sure yet which one am I but I know for sure I am a super fan of this podcast and can’t wait of the next episode.

This podcast is mis-named. “Books” and “Bookshelf” are peripheral to the episodes, which primarily deal with the rather blasé evolution of Hatem’s love life. Essentially the sole purpose of the bookshelf is to provide a timeframe of reference: “When such-and such a book first came out, I was 14-years old, and madly in love with Eliza Doolittle.” And that’s pretty much the role of the book to the podcast. And to be honest, Hatem’s love life is just not all that interesting. Just about any male adult went through the same angst whilst enduring the onset of puberty, so there’s nothing really unique about it. But to Hatem’s credit, he is a good storyteller. He just doesn’t have a very good story to tell.

This is self indulgent garbage. If you are interested in the topic look elsewhere. This was unbearable. I don’t care about your adolescent dating life.

Sadly this podcast is become more of a Richard Hattem therapy session than it is about the books he loves. The Amityville episode was basically about the first love of a 12-year-old but nothing about the book. He speaks of the book, but really doesn’t speak about the book. About the most really mentions about it is reading it to his crush. Hattem has gone from an interesting guest to a dude whose life isn’t that interesting no matter how funny he thinks he can make it. Yet I hold out hope he will get back to the books.

I can’t believe how well this format works. Learning about the books, the reader, and the subject matter—all in parallel. A must-listen if your way into the unexplained also came from books. The host’s ability to weave personal anecdotes with deep dives into literary oddities is nothing short of mesmerizing. It’s like having a late-night conversation with a kindred spirit who shares your fascination with the strange and mysterious. If you’re a book lover with a taste for the unusual, this podcast is your new obsession.

This podcast is one of the human podcasts I’ve ever listened to. The depth of insight into his deepest thoughts, feelings and actions are so raw and make me feel like I’m not alone. Richard relates to each book in a magnificent and personal manner I can’t stop listening. A great mix of paranormal, personal experience and fun books.
