Serious and successful hobbyist (2020) with no education in the field who believes that genealogy is and should be accessible to all. Stumbled upon this show. The overall problem with this podcast is that it really doesn’t do a very good job of explaining things in depth. It does, however, do a good job of gatekeeping, in raising enough unnecessary questions in folks’ minds that they may mobilize their wallets to get a company (like Legacy?) to do the work for them. This is not a learning resource. It is a commercial in podcast form. More specific problems: -Ep 6- statement made that autosomal DNA won’t work “before 1800 or 1820.” Not categorically true; its functionality depends on numbers of generations, not dates. A beginner would be led to believe dates matter. -Ep 7- a displaced people are “headquartered”(is there a big building with their name in neon lights?!) in Oklahoma… there’s certainly a more sensitive way of explaining that. -Was there no one to consult regarding pronunciations of German places in the German research ep.? It makes the listener think the show’s team doesn’t really care. -Also… 21 of 30 reviews (all 5 stars) posted in same day (Aug 15, 2024)? Wouldn’t exactly call that organic… This is not a podcast that is done from a place of care and education. If you’re a beginner, I would implore you to start elsewhere.
