Shane Morris interviews world-class authors and scholars in his show. And, to keep up with these folks, he thoroughly reads their work. What a winning and winsome combination!

I’m always in awe when I listen to this podcast, and always learning new points of view. Shane brings out the best in each guest, and you can tell he’s done his homework, because the questions are deep, as well as wide. As an older nerd, I’m also always happy when Tolken, the MCU, Dune or another staple of fandom gets a name drop or, better yet, a deeper discussion. My only request/recommendation would be to make the website show notes even deeper and more useful. Link to those books mentioned, even in passing. Link to any articles, any movies, anything that would help a listener explore the topic even more. Right now, the show notes are barely worth looking at, and that’s a missed opportunity.

I’m a 21y/o who’s been listening to this show for two years now. Absolutely love everything y’all talk about - it has drastically changed the way I think about my faith and my role in the world as a Christian, and it continues to challenge me to think in a more biblical way about the world around me. This is probably my favorite podcast because of the wide range and yet significant depth of Shane’s conversations. Not to mention that Shane is hands-down the best interview host I’ve ever encountered…no one is better at asking engaging questions!

Greatly enjoyed the psalms episode. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (quoted in Michael Jenkins “In The House of the Lord”) offers this observation “Whenever the Psalter is abandoned, an incomparable treasure is lost to the Christian church. With its recovery will come unexpected power.” While the psalter is not completely lost to the American evangelical community, the sad truth is that a major group of psalms (the laments) have been lost. Among others, Walter Brueggemann has written extensively on this topic. “It is a curious fact that the church has, by and large, continued to sing songs of orientation in a world increasingly experienced as disoriented…It is my judgment that this action of the church is less an evangelical defiance guided by faith, and much more a frightened, numb denial and deception that does not want to acknowledge or experience the disorientation of life… At least it is clear that a church that goes on singing "happy songs" in the face of raw reality is doing something very different from what the Bible itself does.” In a letter to his son Christopher in 1945, J.R.R. Tolkien echoes this need to recover the practice of lament. “... while Genesis is separated by we do not know how many sad exiled generations from the Fall, but certainly there was an Eden on this very unhappy earth. We all long for it, and we are constantly glimpsing it: our whole nature at its best and least corrupted, its gentlest and most humane, is still soaked with the sense of ‘exile’.”

The conversations are always thoughtful and make me think more deeply and in new ways about a variety of topics. I’ve ordered a couple of books after hearing the interviews with the authors. I’ll keep listening!

Excellent thoughts by Shane regarding prayer. I have struggled with praying because I have believed that God would hear my prayer, but also understood that I could not have any influence in how God would work…except to change me. I found Shane’s perspective eye opening, and his quotes from Lewis have given me much food for thought. Thank you.

Shane Morris does a great job of bringing in interesting Christian writers and thinkers who help us to think more deeply (a great habit to get into 😊). Highly recommended!

A show full of wonderful thinkers—Shane himself included! The guests aren’t run of the mill talking heads, but very thoughtful thinkers with their own unique insights and angles. Shane himself brings a refreshing perspective on things, and does well to guide the conversation with inquisitive, thought-provoking questions. Great podcast!

I enjoy the interviews but no need for the ‘longer than the original’ follow-up analysis in the ‘Further Upstream’ episodes.

Shane and his team have really brought their A game to the podcast this year. It gives me optimism there are young Christian leaders like him. I am biased but think both Christians AND unbelievers will benefit from the the thought-provoking conversations.

I appreciate Shane’s ability to think well and connect the dots on the issues of the day, relating them back to biblical truth.

Creation mandate totally, I’m in but curse yet totally detours (Dead is dead,right)

The deep thoughts and brave conversations are needed content for Christians to meditate, process, and learn how to have respectful dialogue with each other and those who desperately need to find healing in Jesus Christ, which is all of us.

I learn so much by listening to Upstream. Thanks for the time it takes to make it available to me.

I’ve only just listened to the episode with Tom Holland (How the Christian Revolution Remade the World) but I loved it. The flavor of conversation was gracious, open/honest, and intellectually astute. I look forward to hearing more!
